Why people don't ski Killington

I've been very clear that some of the decisions of the current management in place at Killington piss me off and I don't think they're in the best interests of helping the mountain regain its former glory. If it takes me being known as a "pain in the ass whiner who consistently craps on the place I have a pass at" to make Killington a better mountain to ski at, then I'm fine with people calling me names.

The problem with TGR is you could say ANYTHING on TGR and a sh*tstorm would ensue, thats the way it is over there, yeah its completely frustrating and makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.

Four years ago if the words "marker bindings" were posted it'd be a 15 page thread about how bad they sucked, last year just mentioning Dukes would get you another 15 page orgy about how FKNA rad Marker was. Now this year everyones realized that Dukes are heavy and suck for touring and the center screw/plate breaks if you hammer on them too hard so the Dukes now completely suck. The same thing happened with dynafit bindings. They sucked because they were for lycra clad euro-fags, then they were cool because you could rock your 10 pound 200cm fat skis and not have to pay a huge weight penalty on the uphill, now they suck again cause Dynafit doesn't build a binding that weighs less then a pound and has a DIN that goes to 20.(after all every 5'10" 145# guy over there NEEDS a DIN of 20 because otherwise he'll walk out of his skis while skiing a low angle groomer)

I will absolutely GUARANTEE you will start to see folks re-selling their Black Diamond Factor boots as the masses wise up and realize that 130 Flex boots that weigh close to 10 pounds and have very little in the way of rearward travel in walk mode aren't as rad to tour in as the everyone hyped them up to be.

From my own perspective, I suggested we do something about the gearswap forum to prevent scammers from being able to rip people off and the nicest thing I was called was a degenerate communist pussy. Yeah it hurt my feelings for a minute or two, but whatever its just the interwebz.

The problem is that its an echo chamber over there, you get 1-5 guys out there that come on and say the sky is purple, and if they've got enough time to kill they can convince the entire forum that the sky is in fact purple irregardless of what the facts might be.

Jay Peak used to be the "maggot approved" mountain on the East Coast three years ago, now its all about Stowe. In another few years when all the young guys get out of College and have to actually pay real prices for passes and the slightly older ones have little ones in the backseat that don't want to make the drive to Northern VT you might find all of us at Killington or *gasp* OKEMO!!!! If you check the roll call thread closely enough you'll see quite a few of the "maggots" will very quietly admit to skiing at Killington and there are a couple who will even commit to LIKING it a little bit. I'm sure there are a couple of posts from me defending Killington if you look hard enough.

To be honest if a little of the TGR hype machine helps drive some traffic to a little hill like Magic and somehow manages to save some of the jobs of the people that work there, and prevents another hill from being added to the NELSAP list then I'm fine with that. And if you should find yourself in the bar upstairs at some point this year, I'll even buy you a beer.

My issue is that TGR has zero sense of mutual respect. We have our spats here but they are moderated by the fact that we all ski at the same mountain. The worst of the flame wars here usually have participants who rarely or never ski Killington.

To keep my blood pressure low, I just put the people who piss me off on ignore.

Haaaaa Haaaaa! Gotta love the internet and the scumbags that post stuff like this! That's why I can't take this sh*t too seriously. I might say people are whining and bust some balls, but there's very few people that I would call names like the above. Most of these people that post sh*t like this wouldn't even look you in the eyes in person. They'll hide in these message boards. I wouldn't say something in here or any message board that I wouldn't back up in person. I read TGR, but never post there. It's entertaining and sometimes I get usefull info, but I don't have the time to post on every board. I already post on several outdoor and music sites...

It might even be flavor of the week some months. Seriously if you spend anytime in the Tech Talk forum you'll know what's going to be on Gear Swap in a month for 2/3 to 1/2 the original retail price. Mostly skis, people buy them too stiff and too long especially if its an exotic ski, but occasionally they'll be a run on bindings as well. I mean look at some of the Bluehouse Maven threads. Anyone who had an ounce of sense would realize that that ski in no way resembled a big mountain charger, but there were some people upset that it wouldn't handle warp speeds.

My favorite fad to this day is the early Bro Models. While I've seen the new stuff and it's top shelf well made stuff, when the first Bro Models came out and people were crawling all over themselves to get a pair, there were threads aplenty on the "bomber durability" and "quality craftsmanship" of the Bro Model. I saw no less then 5 pairs of EC maggot Bro's have either major blowouts(ie the ski completely fell apart) or come with shitty bases or edges straight from the factory.

Now I know that Splat and PM Gear made good on EVERY single Bro that blew up and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend people buy Bro Model skis because I think PM Gears customer service is second to none. But when EC maggots were ordering 188 super stiff Bro's for their everyday ski there was SOMETHING hideously wrong.

I could never read TGR everyone takes themselves WAY too seriously, but some of the pictures are awesome.

why don't people ski Killington?
Experts believe that there is too much grooming (heck even Sky Hawk was groomed a week ago) and the Mountain can become monotonous.
It is too intimidating for Beginners if they want to go anywhere but Snowshed or Ramshead. "How do I get back to my lodge?"
It is quite expensive.

And no I am not a K hater. We like the mountain a lot and once one gets to know the mountain it is easy to avoid the crowds unless they close the upper mountain lifts.

Finally I think it was a mistake to make the only way out of the Bear mountain area the SPE. It has eliminated the lines at the Bear Quad but created a CF at SPE. It would be good if Killington would balence the load between SPE and Bear Quad by establishing a way off Bear via the Bear Quad.
