Killington -To visit or not

I am considering a trip to Killington next easter (2010). One of my pupils (I am a school teacher) is visiting Killington next week and I had never considered it before.

Can you tell me what the conditions are like at that time of year?

Can you recommend any hotels?

What is the transfer time? from the hotel seeing as though I am travelling from England?

Any other info. will be greatfully recieved.

Welcome Dougie. I'm not sure when Easter 2010 falls, whether it's late March or mid - April, and conditions can vary greatly as one moves into April. If it's late March or early April you can expect the mountain to be wide open with good snow that softens up as the day moves on. If it's mid-April, the mountain will probably have started shutting down some of the areas such as Bear Mountain. Conditions will be similar, however, as long as we're not seeing an unusually warm early springtime.

As for hotels, it really depends on what you want to spend. Prices are generally discounted at that point of the season, however, so good deals can easily be found. Check http://www.killington.com for lodging options.

It's about a 3.25 hour drive from Logan Airport in Boston to Killington or you can check out Cape Air for flights into Rutland, VT. There was another thread today on the subject of getting to Killington from Logan so you might check that out.

Skied that week in 2007. Probably got 20 inches of new snow in 2 or 3 days. Conditions were outstanding. Hotel prices are usually excellent, especially mid-week. Had a couple of non-skiers so we stayed at the Grand for convenience and amenities. A standard hotel there goes for over $400 a night in season, we probably paid under $250. Planning on being up there again this year during that week.

You are considering coming from England to ski in Vermont? For what it is worth... if you are going to cross the pond you might as well go west to Colorado, Utah (resorts within 1/2 hour of the airport) or British Columbia. But I don't know of anyone (with the exception of some Brits) who would prefer to spend a week at Killington over spending a week in the Alps. I have great love for Killington, but I would ski the West Coast or the Alps in a heartbeat before the Green Mountains.

When I asked why, more then one told me Alps were a mob scene during the holidays and that the snow wasn't that great that year. Long lift-lines with little or no organization. One man mentioned that London to Boston is an easy flight and that he had many friends who would come to New England for a few days. I was amused and amazed.

I've spoken with many Brits while riding chairs at Killington and the reason they always give me is that it's cheaper to fly to Boston and ski New England than it is to fly to the continent and ski the Alps.

Most of the Brits seem to combine skiing with a New York or Boston stay. The flight from the UK to Boston is pretty trivial. It's a real pain in the neck to connect and continue on to Denver or Salt Lake since you have to clear passport control, claim your bags, and get them over to a different terminal where you have to check in and deal with security again. If you have children, they will have melted down long before you arrive at your western destination. For a novice/intermediate who never leaves the groomed trails, there's not a tremendous difference between midweek in Vermont and skiing in the west. They don't want powder. They don't want ungroomed. They live at sea level so they really don't want 10,000 feet.

Skiing in Europe is basically double the price of skiing in New England. Food and gasoline in the US is dirt cheap. The US is really easy since we sort of speak English. In particular, instruction is much better for Brits in the US. The Brits like our orderly lift queues.

if its intermediate skiers thats a valid thesis if its very experienced skiers then the alps it would be. the alps should be more expensive than vt ggggggggggeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
