Our car is always already parked, we're either in the hot tub, or relaxing thereafter, and we're not waiting 45 minutes to one hour for a table and starting to eat dinner at 8 PM (when we arrived at 6:30).
$8 Martinis at some places are $2 Martinis using any of the 'better' vodkas, at our place. Would you pay $14 for a gallon of gas or $2.50/gallon of gas? I'm the $2.50 kind of guy. Not the moron who pays a 700% price jack.
And I NEVER pay $5 door price to have OUTBACK pizza. But there are plenty of schmucks who'd pay twice that at the door and THEN get gouged again inside.
Yep, the meals at our place are great...very reasonable, extremely delicious, in complete luxury and comfort. And the best part: no folks with really silly attitudes at the bar. Just great friends gathered together in a warm, inviting atmosphere, and all of us delighted in not paying $150 for a couple's dinner.
so you ski here, but dont support any of the local establishments?
Come on JTJ, he has some valid points there. $8 martinis, gin or vodka are ridiculous, along with $6 Long Trails. Customer Service and meals are, well shall we say sub par in many cases, considering the price. AND if it is a busy weekend, forgetaboutit if you don't have a reservation, and if you do have a reservation, expect a half hour delay. I like to sit in the bar for a beer, but then Johnny law is awaiting me on my ride home to harrass me, drunk or not. I can go home, have a few beers, martini, dinner and settle comfortably down by 9 for all less than $20.
prices here arent any higher than any other resort destination out there. you want to talk expensive, check out the Summer House or The Wauwinet on Nantucket. $8 martinis are cheap, you do understand you are getting straight booze right? only place ive had a $6 LT was at the Double Deuce. also, for the record, ive never had bad service at any restaurant/bar up here, ever. where are you getting reservations around here? im not trying to slight you at all Doc, but lets get some things straight here. thanks...
I REFUSE to set foot in Pepinos ever again. Food and Service sucked twice.
Country Man's Pleasure 1st time sucked, 2nd time means I'll try it again, maybe
Most places on the access road that I have been at, food is OK and service good at best. For the price it just is not worth eating on the access road in most establishments.
Pepinos is pretty ok in my book. Food quality is always consistent. Portions are large. Prices are reasonable. Service can be hit or miss, but I've gotten great service most evenings. I don't know how authentic it is, but its got a nice cozy Italian feel to the place. And Luigi usually hits on my wife the whole time, so if they're not authentic, they play the part well!

Doc, in all seriousness, are you finishing your drinks too quickly to the point where the waitstaff cant keep them full for more than 3 minutes?

I am not impressed by the food that is served at Peppino's. I think they could do much better.

Of course, they will never be as good as Momma's Italian cooking!
That kind of captures why I rarely pick Italian when I'm selecting a restaurant. A basic American-style red sauce place like Pasta Pot falls short of what most people make in their own kitchen. I prefer fresh ingredients and that's the essence of good Italian food. When I'm doing Italian, I pull out the pasta machine and make my own pasta. I use tomatoes right out of the garden or a farm stand. I use fresh herbs. That's what you get in Italy and it rocks. I've had equally good in metro-NY and Boston's North End but they have access to fresh produce that is way better than what comes off the back of the Black River Produce truck. I can only duplicate it in this part of the country in the summer when we have fresh produce. You can't do a good job with Italian shopping at the RutVegas Price Chopper.
I've never been in Pepinos. I'm sure it's fine but I haven't been in that building since Claude was cooking and Ned was tending bar when it was the Alpine Inn.
I'm the same way with Mexican this side of the Mississippi. It's probably fine in metro-NY but what you get in New England is usually pretty frightening.

peppino's is "servicable". big hunger after a day of skiing, couple glasses of wine, friends and it's fine. i used to like the place luigi had on rt 4, i guess in mendon.
I ate in Peppino's last night. It's OK Italian food for the most part but, as Geoff says, nothing like you find in Boston or NYC. (So what - Sushi Yoshi is good too...for here...but not like you find in NYC either.) To me, their best dishes are veal, things like marsala and picatta. The bartender's also interesting to talk to. He hosts a talk radio show (9:00 AM - generally conservative slanted) every morning on WSYB in Rutland that's entertaning most of the time and can be listened to on the web. When it's quiet, like it was last night, you get to hold some fun conversations with staff and the ownership.

Feasted at my parent's house last night. Yummmmm! We stop by for dinner once a week and have plenty of leftovers!
My parents neighborhood (Chambersburg in Trenton NJ) where we grew up used to be an awesome place to live filled with Italians and many Italian restaurants on every corner. We didn't go that often since we had Italian at home, but the restaurants were great! Not like it used to be in the old neighborhood anymore unfortunately. Most of the Italian restaurants are gone now replaced with Guatemalan and other Latino places and kinda rundown. Still 2 good bakeries and a few good Italian restaurants.
OK, I'll specify. When you are seated and it takes too long to be served a beverage, something is wrong. When you order the meal, and one was the veal plate, and it is served COLD, something is wrong. When you are left to fend for yourself as in the wait staff ignores you until the plate is all but empty, something is wrong. When you have to flag the wait staff down to get your check and then wait for payment, something is wrong. When you try the place a 2nd time and you get the same service / meal, you don't go back for the third time.
