Happened to me today also, light coating of ice made visibility thru the lens impossible. Got to the top of the Snowden Quad and went into the patrol shack, took goggles off and put by the heater to thaw ice, wiped dry with napkins. Skied to the Northridge triple and ice was already forming distorting my view. Gave up after that! Was snowing lightly on the basin side and must be the fog/cloud that was doing it. Froze instantly so the glove wipe did not work.

Inhale thru the mouth, exhale thru the nose. Thus less moisture escapes plus your nose points downward ,away from the goggles. I also find it is best to leave the goggles on even in the gondi. Putting them up and down exposes them to different temps, moisture etc...

particularly w/ glasses under the goggles. if i raise my goggles off my face in the gondi, i'm done.

still the turbo fan goggles "might" help w/ the icing as i've never had any icing probs. then again maybe i just don't breath when i ski ...

Never take the goggles off in this cold unless you're inside for a while where you'll place them on the table and not on your head. Never lift them up to your forehead where you have massive amounts of heat escaping. If you have a facemask, make sure it doesn't go under the bottom of the goggles. Once you get even a tiny little bit of moisture under your goggles there's nothing you can do but completely dry the lense, foam, etc... Wiping them only helps for a minute until you start moving again outside. Sometimes I'll throw a 2nd pair in my jacket pocket as a backup in this weather...

yes - it seemed the foam was damp on Iceman's goggles when he was having the problem. They weren't properly dried out from the night before. He stupidly left them in his closed transpack.

It's from the frozen fog cloud. Nothing more, nothing less.

There is a lot of water vapor in the air. What you're getting is not unlike rime ice on the trees. The vapor hits your cool lens, condenses and freezes on contact.

I had the issue on Tuesday, and only up in the K-1 area. Lower elevations or aspects where I was out of the cloud, I had no issues.

The Spankster showed me the value of 25cents as we used the glove/boot drier in KBL on our goggles. ....and it worked !

Its freezing on the outside of your outer lense correct? And not the inside of the outer lense, i.e. you have moisture between your two goggle lenses due to seal failure?



If its outer surface, its rime. Ultra tiny water particles freezing on contact with your cold lens surface.

If its between lenses, they need replacing.

If its completely inside, its a moisture collection problem and you need better venting.

You can take some toilet paper and fold it up a couple times and lightly press it onto the foam and the TP will absorb the water out of the foam.
I have worn the same smith IO goggles for three years now and they almost never fog up. When they do they clear right up after i exit the gondola.
If the inside gets dirty i use an antifog cloth i get at the basin for $2.
IO goggles are the best.

I had the icing problem yesterday as well on the Snowden lift. I used my driver's license to scrape the lenses. It took about 15 seconds to scrape all the ice off. My credit card was not flexible enough to do a good job.

I carry a mini ice scraper in my pocket for this purpose. Also works on getting frozen snow off the bottom of your skis after getting the bases wet...

I have that atttached to the lanyard they gave out with passes. Its hangin on my jacket, just pull it scrape and let it recoil...
