Cali Pols Would Put Lids On Kids To Ski, Ride

New California law would require children to wear helmets when skiing or riding.

California's State Senate has now passed a helmet law similar to one passed earlier in the Assembly requiring children under age 18 to wear a helmet when skiing or snowboarding.

It's not law yet, but it's heading that way. Stay tuned.

The bill was written by Sen. Leland Yee, (D-San Francisco). Yee told the Fresno Bee newspaper the bill was written to avoid imposing liability on businesses, with law enforcement being responsible for enforcement.

The bill tells resort operators they must post signs about the requirement and calls for parents to be fined $25 for a violation. Be forewarned: Get those helmets early.

Makes a lot of sense. I hope other states follow suit. It's one thing for adults to want to have the choice to live dangerously and ski without a helmet if they're so inclined, it's another to let kids (either because of their desire or the desire of their parents) do the same thing. They can make up their own minds when they're mature enough to do so.

Good idea, here you need a helmet to ride a bike, why not on the slopes.

Parents that don't teach their kids about the importance of wearing a helmet are selfish and stupid. I feal bad for kids who have clueless parents - unfortunately, there's just too many that do.

Instead of fines, they should make the kids and parents watch an hour of head injury related videos instead. And it should be enforced by the mountain. What are cops going to stake out the ski area looking for tiny lawbreakers?

those vids really make an impression. A few weeks ago I was grinding down a piece of metal, sparks were flying. I immediately thought back to that video they showed us when I was in metal shop about eye injuries and the importance of wearing your safety goggles. I went and put a pair of goggles on.

I'm voting for mandatory full body armor 24/7 for everybody. If we can just save one injury it's worth it!

All 3 of my kids wear helmets every time the're on the snow. No helmets = no skiing. They don't have a problem with it.

I never wore a helmet until I had kids. Now I wear one all the time. Lead by example.

took me two concusions before I decided it was time for a helmet. One concusion was my fault, the other was caused by someone crashing into me....

it's just simple logic.

If you have something protecting your head or whatever part of your body, it suffers less injury, most times, than without said protection.

Kinda like wearing a condom for your other head.

Do those helmet laws suck ?

People who say helmet laws suck have never been to the scene of a MC or bicycle accident where there was a head injury.

First one I ever saw, I was on the job for a week, the guy was riding a MC without a helmet.

He crashed and skidded about 100 feet on the back of his head.

Needless to say, he didn't come down for breakfast the following day.

Or any other day for that matter.
