If one of the kids got hurt, you can bet Killington/POWDR would have been named on that lawsuit.
POWDR needs to crack down on KMS now. If, after this, they do nothing, then the next time a bad KMS-related accident happens they could be held even MORE liable.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a requirement that KMS instructors be orange-jacketed POWDR employees.

Without knowing exactly what arrangement that KMS has with POWDR, here are my thoughts on this.HelmetCam wrote:Only regulars at Killington know they are separate. If there is no official tie in, then KMS would be treated as any other visitor to the mountain.

This really doesn't sound like a responsible parent to me.momofmogulskiers wrote:OK. I am not an online "chatter", but decided to register on this site to weigh in on this one, since my son was one of the B team kids who got rescued on Sunday. I agree that the Coach used very poor judgement in the decision to drop in. However, I do understand how he could make the decision...one of the oldest girls told him she knew the way, and this kid is very reliable (they all know the mountain better than most adults, and ski "in the trees" frequently). He should NOT have done it, if he himself did not know the way, but I do understand why he made that decision. I agree with one of the posters - while the coach had very poor judgement in the initial decision, he did an awesome job keeping the kids calm and moving. There were no tears, no frightened children, and they actually had a "Joke-telling" session to keep their spirits up. They were able to track them every 1/2 hour by the cell, and they were moving at a good pace. Once they hit Wheelerville Road, they sent the snowmobiles in. Bottom line, I am unhappy with his initial decision, but am very grateful to him for how he managed the bad situation. The kids came out safe and all of us learned a valuable lesson ("Grisly" gave them all a lecture about out-of-bounds skiing at the club afterwards). (As an aside, my husband actually did that exact same thing several years ago, and came out in the dark). The other unfortunate thing about this situation is that it reflects poorly on the mountain. The KMS program is not affiliated with the mountain - the Press Release this week made it sound like the Coach worked for the mountain. There are already strained relations between the KMS Program and the mountain, and I am fearful of the ramifications to KMS from the mountain. The KMS Program is a wonderful program - a really bad decision was made by 1 coach, and I hope that it does not negatively impact on the future of the program. My kids are passionate about skiing as a result of this really awesome program.
No matter how "reliable" this 10 YEAR OLD is, she is still 10 YEARS OLD.
The coach should not be listening to her when he has 10 others to worry about.
It can only reflect poorly on the mountain to those who are uninformed. If you know that KMS is NOT part of POWDR, the TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY lies with this coach and KMS as a whole. KMS should make it perfectly clear to their employes that at no time should they ever go out of bounds nor should they ever do ANYTHING that would put ANYONE at any type of risk.

From my interaction with KMS, limited as it may be, I see that this is the image and attitude that is fostered by KMS.
They feel that they are the elite and are coached this way.
Bad way to raise children IMHO.

See it often, they do it under the umbrella of the "ski school" cuts.spanky wrote:KMS has line cutting privileges?Stormchaser wrote:Line cutting privileges should be eliminated. Kids and coaches think they're better than everyone else and are more entitled to the mountain than the rest of us...

While I don't disagree you've clearly gone above and beyond to make your point.

I've never seen any KMS freestyle cutting lines. Not sure about racers as I don't know what they look like.

Don't you typically hang out at the events filming?SkiDork wrote:I've never seen any KMS freestyle cutting lines. Not sure about racers as I don't know what they look like.
Too bad the actual KMS kids have to bear the brunt of the retaliation of these spares in the weekend program. These "coaches" let these wannabes run wild.
Re: B team got lost off the back today
Every single one of them was cutting the line at needles when they had a comp over there earlier this season. I highly doubt they were that pressed for time to get back up for their next run... the line was way less than 5 minutes long.SkiDork wrote:I've never seen any KMS freestyle cutting lines. that would have been athletes from all mountains since it was a comp...umby wrote:Every single one of them was cutting the line at needles when they had a comp over there earlier this season.
