GAME ON. Be prepared for opening....

Post by Highway Star »

Just looked at the NOAA 48 hour weather graph. They have a perfectly acceptable high elevation snowmaking window starting this afternoon, and going all the way into TUESDAY.

Image

Temps overnight tonight will be as good as can be expected to this time of year. They will have strong snowmaking overnight and should be able to announce a saturday opening around noon on Friday.

Barring that, I would call a Sunday opening nearly 100% likely at this point.

All I see is a red x. but my research came to the same conclusion. if they want to open they can. There is likely a r*in event next weekend though so we will see if they are serious or not.

Classic early season opening scenario. Just classic.

Option 1: Blow snow when able in last week of October or 1st week of November and open on it, knowing you might not be able to stay open through the first 2 weeks of November.

Option 2: Blow snow when able but stockpile it and open in the second week of November, plus or minus depending on weather.

Killington has not said anything other than we will blow snow as soon as we get a good window. They could open this weekend...............

but I'm not betting on it. As much as they want to say they're open and Irene has been conquered, I think they want to say we closed a week later even less. The weekend of 11/5 is looking warm right now.

Tuesday evening I shared a beer with some K higher ups, a weekend opener would be shocking to me after that conversation. I thought their thinking would be more aggressive for an early open, doesn't sound that way.

The whole stairway/upper mountain strategy changes the game and we would have to look back to the "trucking" days to see what is possible with snowmaking and snow retention up there.

This is not the same as blowing a foot and a half of snow on upper cascade in early October. If the forecast pans out, they are going to put down 3-6+ feet of snow on Rime, Reason, and UEF by Tuesday. This should be enough to stand up to any marginal weather or thaws.

They NEED to do this, and it is the whole point of having the stairway, so they can take advantage of every snowmaking window and be open for thanksgiving weekend no matter what. Will that inhibit them from opening this weekend? Perhaps, but hopefully not.

As far as I can tell, the weekend of 11/5 is looking mostly dry with high temps at the North Ridge area close to the mid/high 40's and low temps in the high 20's to low 30's. While this surely doesn't allow for snowmaking, I wouldn't say it's "warm" either. At least not "warm" as in "the snow we made from Thursday to Tuesday is in risk of melting and we won't be able to withstand temps in the 40's during the day for several days". Without any significant r*in events on the horizon at this time and no significant warm up into the mid to high 50's or low 60's and with forecast highs at night to remain close to freezing throughout the 15 day forecast, you would imagine that snow retention should not be a huge problem.

That being said, I don't trust Powdr when it comes to opening early. So if I had to guess I would say they go conservative and pick option 2. However, I do believe that as the forecast stands right now, they don't have powerful reasons to be worried about melt out.

"Chris Nyberg gave a brief update on Killington Resort's situation. The damage to the Killington Base Lodge was mostly to the Superstar Pub addition which was built on the old outdoor deck. The rest of the K1 Base Lodge is fine and was not destroyed as rumored. Chris also reported that he considered the resort fortunate to survive with minimal damage. They plan to open at the end of October or beginning of November weather permitting. Their concerns are for the community and Chris said "all of our assets are available for the use of the community." "

I think weather permits.
