going up to killington often with baby - options?

Hi.

I was wondering. A few of the people here have kids.. so I figured I'd ask the experienced. My wife and I are having our first (hopefully) this week. Up to now, our skiing has been pretty much me going up to Killington on a half-share, with her on a quarter share.

Now.. with a baby, I am wondering what my options are for when the wife and baby come up with me (I may still be able to go on my own once a month or so.. she's pretty cool). Also, what are some affordable ways of doing so.

Will I pretty much be forced to start doing the hotel thing? (big ouch from a $$ standpoint)

What are options regarding Day Care and/or Babysitting if we both want to ski?

I would recommend that you look for a ski house that allows kids and get a share in that. I remember in the old chat room that someone posted information about such a house. Maybe someone in here took the information down and can share it with you. We did the renting of condos route and it got very expensive. That is one of the reasons we ended up buying our own place.

SNS already posted the link for the daycare. I used the Penguin since my kids were about 8 months old. The only drawback is that they might pick up colds, etc. from exposure to other kids.

Yes. Getting a condo is on the long term plan (5-6 year?), but certainly can't afford it right now.

My first child was born in early January, and went to the nursery at Loon at six weeks old. Since that first time 24 years ago, I spent 13 years using ski resort nurseries throughout New England. I never had a problem, except with availability. If you're skiing on a school vacation week, or on a weekend, you'll need a reservation. And like other reservations, be careful when you give your credit card upon making the reservation if you're concerned about a refund should you or your baby not make it to the mountain on the reserved date. Affordable? I guess that's a matter of perspective. It seems to me that it was always about the same amount of money as a full-day adult lift ticket. I'm sure that's an easy answer to find.

Definately look into the season pass option for daycare if your planning on skiing alot. My wife and I got it for my daughter (14.5 months old) and for the $1000 we paid, she's had 31 days in daycare on it (just under $30 a day so far and I'm planning on having her use it 3 more days before it ends in 2 weeks).

As Ty correctly noted, you will get to deal with coughs/colds/etc though, but as my wife and I look at it, it's just exposure to strengthen my daughter's immune system before she's on the hill in a little over a year.

BTW, while I only have a couple of days experience with the daycare at K, I can't say enough good things about the daycare at Mt Snow. This has been the one true area where something that ASC has done/runs has completely EXCEDED my expectations!

I agree with Dr. Jeff that you should get a season pass if you plan on being at K often. My daughter has been in the ministar program since the first weekend it opened and she will be there on the last weekend it is available (BMMC weekend I believe). By that time she will have spent 39 days in ministars. I believe I paid a little over $1500 for the season pass so I figure it cost approximately $40/day for lessons and lunch. She is doing great in her program. It is after they close and before they open that we will have a problem in that one of us will have to spend time with her while the other skis. Of course now she will be able to ski with us for a good part of the day too.

My daughter came home from Mt Snow daycare today with multi colored hair from finger painting! I guess I should have taken a couple of more runs so they could have gotten her fully cleaned up before I picked her up, Oh well atleast we have some nice new "artwork" for the refrigerator now!

I can't tell you how many outfits my son and daughter have ruined while in K's daycare. I learned not to put the good clothes on them because they manage to get paint or markers on themselves all the time. I do wish that K and other daycares would only use washable markers and paints.

Ty, atleast MS uses water based/water soluble fingerpaints in daycare. (either that or I've just been real lucky with the spray 'n wash so far

). But after seeing a few of my daughters "really cute" outfit come home covered with various cheese and pasta sauces that were lunch as well as other random toddler stains, we now send in in clothes that I my wife and I jokingly refer to as the "we're awfull parents" clothes!

Actually they probably use the washable ones at K too but my daughter is an expert at getting to things that should not be in her hands (like scissors) and I think she gets to the Sharpies that they use to mark things belonging to the kids like gloves and neck gators. Those are permanent markers so if she gets them on her clothes they don't come out.

Oh yes I've learned all about the sharpie masking tape labels this winter, in fact my car and my daughters car seat are covered with about 25 lables right now

And I think that I must now have a bottle cap from just about every brand on the market right now! I'm just waiting for a year or 2 from now when I'm sure we'll be coming home with random mittens/gloves, etc. And I know we'll be dealing with a lost pass or 2 in the coming years
