On a clear day ...

Post by Stache »

One thing I want in the new peak lodge are photos taken on a clear day with labels of the different ski areas you can see from the top of K.
After all these years I am still not certain of which is which and which white peaks can be seen. Mt. Marcy?? Mt. Washington?? Mt. Mansfield??

I like it! I can't wait to see what the new lodge looks like. Anything, including a mobile home, would've been an upgrade to that lodge in it's last years. It's a shame, from a historical perspective, that the original peak lodge was not maintained over the years.

The have a truely unique situation, in having a lodge at that elevation in which you can see for miles in multiple directions. The first time I was ever in that old peak lodge, it was cloudy below ~ 3800 feet. So it was sunny when you got off of the gondola and you were above the clouds. It was a pretty cool experience!

Along those lines - there is so much rich history on Killington's early years and its growth to what we see today. It would be a great point of interest and attraction to the public if they could set up a wall somewhere in the new Peak lodge with all those great photos of Pres on the slopes in his youth starting out on his life's passion, pix of trails the way they used to look, the fashions & equipment of the 60's/70's, various activities that went on, etc. and photos of the original lodge & gondola. There is a ton of history to be proud of, and it needs a public home. Not everyone has a Lorentz book to ponder.

Something like this would seem out of place in the shabby run down base lodges, but the new peak venue seems perfect to me.

I agree that the lodge should display historic photos and information showing the history of Killington and also the horizon listing all the surrounding peaks in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. Can you see into Canada from the summit? I'm sure they will have a nice bar too, maiking it the highest bar in the state!

Clouds were at the level of Stache's photo, but it was as clear above the clouds as Storm Chaser's photo.

Of Course I left my camera in the car that day...

Clouds below the peak are sometimes referred to as an under cast. In the pictures it looks more like fog down below.

Pointing out the Peaks across Vermont, New Hampshire and New York would be great. Unfortunately, with the POWDR mentality, I doubt they will point out OTHER ski resorts.

From the peak:

Sunapee, Ascutney, Roundtop, P-Okemo-N, Magic, Stratton, Mt. Snow, Top of Bromely (if you look real hard). Whip around across Lake Champlain and I think it is White Face and maybe Gore. to the Right of Camel's Hump is Mansfield.

Any others?

I LOVE skiing above the clouds. It's so magical and stress-reducing. All the skiers across the mountaintops feel connected because we are the only ones who can see this sight.

West Mountain is practically due West (duh?!?!) but only visible from the peak.

Edit: West is more W-SW from K peak.

Also, isn't Mount Snow before Stratton when circling clockwise around the mountain?

Yes Spanky, Snow is to the Left of Startton. Can you actually see any part of either Cannon or West mountains? Also, skime, Stowe is Mount Mansfield peak.
