I thought he was, but he is not

Post by skiersleft »

I thought MS was God. But this not blowing snow because of the budget crap is bull sh*t. If you want to be the beast again, you blow when low temps are at record lows. You blow SS until it really has 20' depths. Not this bull sh*t lie of 20' depths when everyone knows that middle superstar is thin if the goal is June, as MS told everyone it was. I don't care about nyberg and powdr. If you talk the talk - as MS has done - you've got to walk the walk, he's walked the walk, until February 2014. He's messed up big time with snowmaking late season. And we've got to call him out. As we always do. No one gets a pass on Kzone. Not even God.

Since MS has done sooo much right in the last two years, I am willing to cut him some slack on this one.
Gotta keep the powers that decide if he stays or if he goes happy.
Don't want to see him or the new/old Killington attitude go.

Heres an idea referring to SS snow. Why can't the groomers push the snow from under the lifeline back on the trail? There are huge piles pushed into the woods that could be utilized on SS. Ski patrol could take down part of the rope line in that area and the cats could bring the wasted snow to the trail. Point to Ponder.

Its going to make it easily to May - its a complete crap shoot after that - unless you make 80 feet of snow -

And are you going to be there every weekend till June if he makes snow?

They blew a massive amount last year in an excellent snow season and didn't make it to June. Why would they spend Thousands of $'s now? The most they can hope for if it stays cold is a few more days than last season on a 100 foot patch of slush and mud. What's the point? :?
I have no problem with them saving that money for something else...

I'm sure when it's needed, maybe in May, they will do that. No reason to touch it right now.

The truth is the weather in December killed K's snowmaking (as well as most of Vermont's). Killington blew through their snowmaking budget for the entire season by Christmas. They ended up making +50% more snow this year vs. a regular season despite skyrocketing electricity and fuel prices. So despite the high cost, Mike, Jeff, and their teams did the right thing. I think they did an outstanding job this season with the varied winter temps. Read Jeff's blog entry on snowmaking; they had to make some really difficult choices.

If they don't blow snow soon as utility prices fall and temps are still below freezing, they had better move some snow to even out the depths needed before it gets warm. Between tower 8 and 9 looks real thin to me.

I don't think there's enough snow to make much of May on middle, unless we have a very cold April. I'm guessing May 4 might be it.

The crazy energy prices we saw early in March are gone. Spot market power price has dropped down $0 per MWH for many hours of the overnight periods since. This is typically were Killington has taken advantage in the past to make snow. The business decision to pull the snowmaking plug had already been made. Like it or not this is a business that needs to make sound choices to protect the bottom line.

On a peak winter Saturday the mountain may get as many as 15,000 skiers. Peak spring Saturday you are looking at 1,500 skiers. Making a huge pile of snow to serve a diminishing crowd was not in the cards this year.

Getting a full seven month ski season in is one of the things I love most about Killington. If we end up with a 6 &1/2 month season I will still be happy. Every winter here has it's own unique twist.

I was thinking of you about the quote of the day a couple weeks ago when a guy asked me at the top of Superstar just before dropping in:
"Is this trail all Moguly?"
Was he sleeping riding up the lift?

First to open. Last to close. That's what they shoot for.

People here (myself included) and elsewhere, stated "Mike wants June". I'm sure he does want June, but he also wants to run a successful business.

+1 Following the clown who couldn't even spell April, Mike wanting to make it until June (even if he can't) is a major step back (or is that forward?) toward letting Killington be Killington once again.
