You may be confusing back country with side country. But you would still be wrong.

...based on hiking exposure to local terrain, i know there has to be worthwhile BC around between Rutland and Bridgewater areas...goals include not seeing or hearing any mechanized uphill transport equipment. realistic here...not looking for amazing, just decent.

The Killington area has neither the best side country nor the best backcountry. It is definitely worth heading further north if that is what you seek. In general, compared to Sugarbush / Mad River, Stowe, or Jay, Killington has less snow, less friendly exits back to the resort, and thicker less approachable glades. Obviously Pico is the same.

Pico is a flat hill. Flat trees. Flat BC. I ski there one day of my season and skin it when its closed.

Getting lost outside the ski area had some benefits buts it is flat and not many tracks to follow out. A handheld compass, topo map, and a headlamp saved my ass from a long night and making the paper. Luckily I made it to the Catamount XC ski trail and made it out.

there is definitely better bc in other areas including north, south, east, and west...not looking for the best, not looking for any resort attachment. just trying onto get onto some local stuff for times when going elsewhere is difficult or not desired for whatever reason...weather, time, friends. don't mind doing the uphill work for even just ok on the down.
