Big Moose Deli Bypass

Post by Woodsrider »

For all my New Yorker brothers and sisters who are sick of getting held up on the way home from K due to the traffic at the light by the Big Moose Deli in Hoosick Falls on Rt 7, I discovered a cool bypass. Make a left off of 279 onto the old Rt 7 south of Bennington and make your first right onto Breeze Hollow Rd. Make a right into Green Rd and a right on 346. It dumps you on 22 in North Petersburg. Not a short cut by any stretch, but we saved easily 15 minutes of traffic yesterday and it is a beautiful drive. Really beautiful. Thank Waze for that. Love that app.

I have used that route before, but only when the traffic was backed all the way up onto the bypass! It really is a nice drive, but I suspect it won't be for long with the advent of Waze.

Can anybody please tell me if this section of road gets backed up on Saturday afternoons? It looked horrible when coming up on Sunday. Figure it might be better on a Saturday. Really don't want to take 4 over to I-87 but we will go that way or take the detour if needed.

I've used that detour once in the last 20 years on a holiday Sunday heading back to NY, but I usually don't leave K until 4 or 5 on Sunday. The detour puts you a few miles south on 22, that's the right direction on 22 if you are taking the Taconic so it's not really out of the way, but I don't know if it's worth it to take 22 back north to 7 to get back to 87.

My guess would be that you won't need to do the detour on a Saturday.

Thanks Bobby. We had no problems getting thru there. Just got on I-87 at Albany. It will be my turn to drive in about 10 minutes.

Once again, it was nice meeting you and we had a great week up there regardless of some of the weather.

And taking 100 South was about 15 minutes faster than 7 from Rutland. Thanks for that tip too.

What? From Killington? 100S to 11 to 30?

Spanky - From the house we stayed at at bottom of West hill road. Usually takes 7 hrs, today we got home in 6:40. Even if it wasn't any faster it sure was way more scenic and with less traffic stops.

And yes, it was 100 to 11 to 30. Only problem on the way home was a stone taking a good chunk out of the windshield on 87. Police in New Jersey were pulling folks over left and right. Got a very warm welcome from wife, kids and dog.
