Yes, that Woodbury event broke Killington's long streak of first opening in the east. Killington printed out little stickers claiming that, then at the last minute Woodbury, CT put out that little patch and claimed "open". So Killington had to cancel handing out those stickers. I did manage to get some anyways.

The only contest that really counts if first to open a non snowmaking trail.

October 18th last year... can’t remember exactly when TTB was... but well before thanksgiving

Opening day last year was 10/19 and they stayed open continuously into the season. Top to bottom was 11/14, so that makes it the second longest stairs season at 26 days. Only 16-17 was a longer stairs season at 29 days.

So we are skipping stair season. No great loss.

As forecast trends go, this is fairly indicative:

You have to be careful with the graphical forecasts. They are from one model, and one model run, who knows how recent, and who knows what algo they used to estimate the temp at a particular elevation (I doubt they are using the "Soundings Data" but who knows.

All I know is that from looking at the 925mb (2,500' elevation) and 850mb (4,800') temps there would appear to be marginal but doable snowmaking windows on North Ridge this weekend. Without looking at the soundings and looking just at Euro I'd guess 11pm Fri-11am Sat, maybe a brief window Saturday night, and 7pm Sunday until noon or so Monday. Warms up before more significant cold later next week, but that's a ways out.....

And I would agree with the sentiment that since it will be November that they open as soon as they can.

You're reading far too much into it. That graph is a screen grab from Snow-forecast, which many of us, myself included, scorn as notoriously unreliable, usually erring on the snowy side. I included it only as a trend, an easily understandable graphic, and a notable drop at the end of the week, which pretty much all forecasts are expecting. I'm also familiar with equal pressure charts, winds aloft, and different model runs, but that's further depth than I usually go.

Sno forecast is eternally optimistic. Not notoriously unreliable.

It uses the Euro - not good at long range snow forecasting.
