Our Presidents have, at least since FDR, tried to appeal to Americans' better angels (in the words of Abraham Lincoln) and to bring this country together. Trump, whether he himself is racist, has spent his campaigns and presidency appealing to our biases and, for that alone he should be dismissed. I will not, however, simply dismiss my friends and family members for ignoring that aspect of his existence.

I’m impressed with your kind outlook. I hope I’m someday able to get there.

Maybe it comes from age and experience. Maybe it comes from naivete. It's possible it comes from having gone through the 1960s, protested the Vietnam War, resisted the draft but retained the ability to speak with and be friends with those who were on the opposite side of the debate and with whom I later worked and became friends with. We both let our differences go over time and could even discuss the war. If you lived through that era, as emotional as the disagreements were, most found a way to get past it over time. As I'm now much older with fewer years to recover friendships, maybe I choose to look past the differences the best I can and not let those relationships fray in the first place.

If you ever saw the end of Ken Burns' "The Civil War" series and remember the Pickett's Charge reenactment at Gettysburg in the 1930s, you might understand what I'm trying to say. Wounds heal. Don't let differences separate friends and family. Most of the time, it's not worth it.

I'm one of those folks who hoped this election would be a repudiation of "Trumpism" but I have to grudgingly admit that this election was not that at all. A sizeable chunk of people, probably 30-40% of the population, are ardent Trump fans that are willing to overlook his glaring flaws and buy into all the conspiracy bullsh!t about the deep state. Even worse, there's a sizeable chunk of middle-of-the-road folks willing to hold their nose and vote for Trump despite all the corruption and depravity, presumably because of certain policy decisions (ie lower taxes, abortion, etc). So, unfortunately, this is who we are. I take some solace in the notion that more than half of the population rejected Trump twice, but I know that a sizeable group of those who rejected Trump are of a similar nature to Trump supporters, just on the left side of the aisle (ie willing to overlook character flaws and corruption and buying into the propaganda when it favors their tribe).

I used to like politics. But the older I get, the more I hate politics. It generally brings out the worst in people. If you judge people based on their politics, you're often judging them based on their biggest flaws. But people are a mixed bag, we're all flawed, and we should be judged on our character as a whole, not just on our flaws.

It’s undeniable this is who we are. Have we always been this way? I think so.
Win or lose, Trumpism will not have been swept into the dustbin of history; it will remain all over the furniture. It’s part of the furniture. Unsweepable.

Like a certain someone around here repeatedly stated they wanted to see Clinton swing from the statue of liberty?

Kushner now telling Trump he should concede. Maybe his legal challenges will end sooner than we think.
