Silicon Spray to ease taking off ski boots

Post by Freshies »

Does anyone use silicon spray to ease donning and doffing ski boots? Do's and don'ts? Pro's and cons? Does silicon break down foam liners? Does it reduce "grip" and feel like it loosens fit once you're in your ski boot? Serious, kind, and respectful answers, please...but humor is always appreciated:) (I would love to be able to put them on and take them off at my car. I do warm my boots before I put them on, and they slip in fairly easily, but taking them off is extremely difficult.) Thanks, Friends.

I put my left boot on at home and the right boot on in the parking lot. Both are warmed in the house and then I keep the right boot near the rear seat heat on my 5-10 minute drive to the hill. It stays warm enough to go on easily. On cold days, however, removing the right boot is difficult with the cold shell. If it won’t come off without undue effort, however, I sit in the car with the heat on for a few minutes just to warm it back up. After that, it comes right off.

Need super dry socks that don't stick.

I have custom insoles that some time get sticky.

I carry the silicone just in case.

How do you use it to get boots off?

Kind of along the lines of Dr. No's method...

I use custom liners (zipfit) that are meant to be put on without the shell and then you put your foot with the liner on into the shell. That can be a real challenge with a cold, stiff shell so I also have a heated boot bag. The warm shell is super soft and real nice to put a foot into to start the day.

I would gather, just a warm, soft boot will make putting it on much easier.

Those look interesting. Did you buy them online and any issues with boot compatibility due to cuff height? I see they sell them at Boot Pro in Ludlow.

Never take your ski boots off in the woods...

25 below zero with chemical toe and sole warmers in my boots along with my thickest socks to try to keep my feet from freezing solid. 1/2 a run into things, my feet are so cramped up from lack of volume that I have to stop and pull out the toe and sole warmers. Get em out, stretch out the cramps, and then can't get my feet back into my boots cuz they're frozen bricks. Took me and a buddy 20 minutes to finally jam my right foot back in. I was prepared to ski to the bottom of Bear with just a sock on my right foot, but I was outvoted in favor of more pushing. Funny thing was I had the helmet cam running the whole time. You can't see any action, just hear a lot of grunting and groaning - talk about ski porn...this sounded dirty.

I had a pair of the original Hanson wax injected boots back in the 1970s. When they were new the were the best fitting boots I ever had and with a little silicon spray were easy to put on and remove. I had an incredible feel for my skis with great control. Of course this had nothing to do with being 45 years younger at the time. Unfortunately the wax broke down after a few ski days and the boots became torture traps. The next generation of Hansons had flow liners replacing the wax and were painful from the start. That was my last pair and Hanson was gone soon after.

I've owned two pair over the years. I purchased both from a bootfitter. No issues with shell fit or cuff height and I've put the two different liners in several shells over the years. Go figure... I've worn out my shells faster than my liners. The "omfit" cork is awesome. There are how-to videos online showing the fit/re-fit process... It involves heating the shells (I put them right in my kitchen oven) so they're nice and soft and then working your foot/liner in/out of the shell.

I have problem feet. I will never go back to stock liners. As a matter of fact, I have several pairs of unused Salomon liners!

I have something similar for my zipfits. I tried finding it online (bought it from a shop in UT) but don't see it. In my search, I found the above mentioned horn promoted on the zipfit site: https://www.zipfit.com/en-eu/all-access ... boot-horn/

Raichle flexon (now full tilt and soon to be just K2 3 piece boots). If they fit your feet you will never complain about on/off again. On my 6th pair and would never go back to a traditional overlap boot.
