SOME NOTES ABOUT SKIOLOGY'S PLANS
I'm afraid that we haven't reached our modest crowdfunding goals for this season, but we haven't given up. I will be announcing some special discounts on lift tickets and other things that we will be sending to those who have made contributions this season in the coming days.
If you contributed by way of our Facebook Fundraiser or by Venmo, keep your eyes open for DM's asking you to fill out a simple form on our site so that we can send you this stuff (we do not spam or sell addresses). We have this information however for all of those who left Snow Tips on our site or who have signed up on our Patreon. If you would like to support Skiology please visit our site at www.skiology.com and leave us a Snow Tip, and we'll get you some of these discounts also.
Crowdfunding Alone Won't Work for Skiology
I miscalculated here, but such is life. As of today, we've seen an increase of about 22% over last season in voluntary contributions despite pushing much, much harder, while the group has grown by 144% and greatly increased the the amount of labor to maintain effectively. Running a group of over 40,000 people is not at all easy, and this is on top of supplying content and communicating with countless members. Skiology however is the most engaging ski and ride group on Facebook. This wasn't by accident, it was the result of hard work, so the only way we've failed is in making Skiology financially supportable.
Unfortunately many people see crowdfunding as a one-time contribution, but Skiology is a service, an annual service with tons of ongoing labor. Some people also mistake crowdfunding for a charity, but Skiology doesn't help people pay for their medical bills or put food on the table, we help mostly people in the middle and upper classes have better days skiing and riding. If people see contributing to Skiology in the same light as donating to a charity, we just don't compare well, but I can't change perceptions enough for it to matter. The way the "free to use and voluntary to support" model works is if you find value then you should support it because you already received something that you valued. That's not charity.
We might end up reaching our seasonal goal, though this seems pretty unlikely at this point, I've had to ask way more than I am comfortable with doing, and our goal was quite modest to start, literally an average of 75 cents per member and needing just 3% of the group to help support us. I am hoping that with the help of some useful discounts for contributors that we can get even more people to step forward to support our efforts, but this will be the last time Skiology focuses on crowdfunding. This is no one's fault but my own. I cannot argue with the collective results from over 40,000 people. That's just how it works. Crowdfunding works better with significant scale paired with low financial need, and also when it is a one-time effort.
Skiology Needs to Pivot
What has made this group unique is that it is both my blog for weather and information plus some entertainment, and also a community that crowdsources what is going on and also entertains. I know this group to be special and I value it a great deal for the insight that people here provide as that also makes me much, much better. I feed off the group as much as the group feeds off of me. Unfortunately that doesn't pay the bills and crowdfunding won't either.
Last week wasn't a vacation for me (didn't claim that it was though some assumed), it was a real-world test to see what would happen to the group without someone directing many of the conversations and what would happen with the weather again being on our page. I spend just 1/3 of my time creating content and working on business, and 2/3 of my time managing and communicating with members of this group. I'm looking to lighten my load. If you can't grow revenue, then you need to cut expenses, and labor is one of them. Since crowdfunding won't do it, this group needs sponsors and a subscription service to support it, otherwise it's too much time to do it like I have for the past 4 seasons.
If Skiology's coverage comes back next season, it will be as a sponsor supported and subscription based service with more weather data and conditions hosted on our site and with an optimized mobile format as well. We would likely use a leaky paywall system where people would get a certain number of free weather articles per month before the paywall is triggered similar to a newspaper. News and commentary would not be paywalled. We would also offer email subscriptions and alerts for subscribers and a dashboard with the latest weather model loops and a summary of data on their favorited ski areas. This may sound simple, but I need the help of two developers (already have two very capable and eager friends lined up) and our revenues must eventually scale to also support their labor in the long-term. We would need to pass 5,000 paying subscribers by our third season for that to make sense, but that is the bare minimum. I estimate that we can probably get at least 2,000 subscribers next season, but we'll have to keep growing our reach and improving our offering.
If you want to see Skiology continue beyond this season, the best thing to do would be to support our efforts now as that would give us more confidence in pushing forward and into a more appropriate model. At present less than 900 members out of over 40,000 have. We will reach our modest seasonal goal with about 350 more contributors. If we reach our fundraising goals I'll cover weather, conditions, and news here until only Killington is left, but if we don't, I'll probably pack it in at the start of April and focus on future efforts and primarily posting on our Page.

Where does one start with this? Almost every sentence has a hole in it that one could drive a truck through. His fund raising goes a long way in explaining why Clownology still lives in some form albeit not the original incarnation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/609390670124306

Re: Northeast Skiology is Clownology . . . .
So to recap. This guy is not trained at all in meteorology, Apparently only likes groomed, mellow terrain, and is a first class idiot trying to fleece people on BookFace to make a living?
Why would 40000 people follow this guy? I mean its telling that only 900 suckers have given him some money, but still 40000 at least look at what he's saying.
I look at weather models for fun (especially in winter) and make personal forecasts but I am in no way trained and would never share this information with anyone that isn't clear that I'm an amateur (i.e. friends and family).

Re: Northeast Skiology is Clownology . . . .
A lot of that could possibly be due to people clicking the like icon and then forgetting about it as the site gets buried in the BookFace morass. I also know for a fact that people are on that to socialize with others (certainly not with Skiology Matt) and then others just to watch the train wreck for laughs.

I'm sure the tropical tidbits guy wouldn't be very happy that this clown is using his information. I use that site, but certainly not for commercial gain.
