wednesday 3/30 report

today "might" have been winter's last gasp. beautiful blue sky morning though a stiff breeze made it feel a lot colder. 9-12:30 shift. with my back issues, mostly a groomer day. back to beating kms down highline. felt more like WC wednesday conditions. LEF was softer & better. lower cascade mighty firm. uppermouse>trap>chute under the guns most of the way featured mostly dry gun pow. thought claw & cruise the best on the east side. conditions overall good but thought it was little firmer than the day before. but any discussion of trails stops at superstar. rotd again under the guns. the woods were unbelievable. in my memory think the last time supe was this deep was 1996-97. not making any predictions but we know what happened that year. big time kudos to mike & mtn opps for this and what they do on a daily basis.

I was thinking of the mid 90s when my friend sent me the pictures of the "aftermath" when the guns were shutdown today. Below Preston's under those HKDs and the fan has never been that deep though.

we stood on the precipice of the cliff/mtn they built alongside the jump venue. has never been deeper in modern times. think it's deeper than '17 & '19 when we skied into june. there are a couple spots higher up where maybe it needs to be deeper. but this really is the deepest i've since the mid 90's. at the end of the day, mother nature decides.

The top . The total height doesn't look as high as previous years based on the visible mound form the road, but the backside pile on Gateway is bigger.

I stood at the top of pile above the fan gun on Tuesday, and it was a looooong way down even then.
I have a question:
What is the latest in the season that Killington has made snow?
Was this close to that?

i remember one year they made snow the night before the bmmc. that was in april. but for a sustained snowmaking effort, this is one of the latest.

Thank you to all who posted pictures. Kudos to the snow makers and all the Killington personnel for getting so much snow made so that the season can be longer for those mogul skiers who will come from other mountains to participate with the Killington skiers in a great late season. Does anyone know where all the access road gatherings will occur because if they are breaking things down at the old lodge and clearing it out, there should be a lot of trucks there to get that job done? Hopefully, those gatherings will still happen somewhere. Lots of good memories from years past. Lots of skiing and lots of partying.

Access road closure during the weekdays will only be for 2 weeks. Fridays excluded.

The view of K's slopes from the summit tower at Cannon Wednesday morning was nice, but I like the look of those close-up pictures even better.

Mid-Late Day Bush Report: Except for not getting the goods on Superstar, a great day at the bush with close to 20 runs on the 11:30 - 4:00 shift. Mostly sunny with some light clouds in the afternoon and plenty of corn in the non-north facing areas. Nat coverage still very thin [extremely elevation dependent]. Great views of the Adirondacks [incl. Whiteface], Lake Champlain, Presidential Range, and Killington/Pico from the top of Lincoln Peak.

ROTD: Sunrise off the North Lynx lift was just perfect corn when we hit it mid-day. Three peat. Under the same lift, Morning Star is pretty much toast [not a do-over] and Birch Run though a bit thin was very good.

Further down on that 'side' Waterfall was really good, with one very thin spot, and Sleeper was sweet corn all the way down [another three peat].

From the Peak, Ripcord about as good as that run gets with nice carveable surface on the trail and some side options to play with. Jester, as always, was very good. Then, my technical ROTD was Upper Organgrinder [pretty icy moguls] -> Spillsville [decent nat cover and quite good].

Off Super Bravo, Upper Birdland was very good. Lower was closed due to lack of snow. The run across the top and down Spring Fling very good. Other nats in the area [e.g., Twist] excellent at first, then completely gone at the bottom. Steins too firm to tempt me on it today.

Nice Apres Ski in the Rumble [part of the hotel]. Beautiful place and some of the best wings I've ever had.

Another great road trip.
