I'm a bit unclear how a big wet spot on the ground will constitute a massive head start, but okay.

Top of Locke is going to be in the mid sixties for the next few days. Jordan, a bit higher, will be a bit cooler. They might be able to save something there. The real giveaway on all this is that Killington didn't make any snow for the World Cup venue. They've always made snow at every reasonable opportunity.

A Snidely Whiplash level of villainy. How will Dudley Do-right (AKA Mike Solimano) counter this treachery? Just untie yourself from the railroad tracks already and go home, Nell.

Opening Day?

Post by Southside_Bobby »

What is the latest opening day on record at K?

If the WC build was down to the wire last season, things look very concerning this year.
The shorter their window to build on Superstar, the more likely it will draw more resources than ever away from the recreational expansion.

We can only hope all the new infrastructure will make a difference.

Somehow, this whole "they should have tried to open for a couple of days before summer returned" sentiment sounds increasingly silly.

Meanwhile, if they had gone all out to create a marketing opening, as Snoloco insists they should have, for every one of him there would be ten people saying ticket prices are expensive enough without wasting their money on stunts.

Honestly, top of Locke vs top of Jordan, we are talking 1 or 2 degree difference at most. And that assumes no inversion which did happen Monday night. Locke will likely endure better than Jordan with regards to made snow because Locke got an extra run night Jordan didn't and at least for T2, the gun spacing is some much denser than anywhere else on the hill. If they hold onto some decent patches it will have been worth the effort. If not, well they were not alone as WV turned on High Country, BW made some as did SL.

rogman beat me to it. as you said, the big tell is other than that little test, they never fired the guns on superstar. as we know they need to take advantage of every window and clearly this wasn't it.

could they have "painted" rime and gotten it open for a few days. probably. but they're not gonna do that anymore. when they open, they wanna stay open and provide a quality product.

and it's not like the old days. i did the K chair a couple times back in the 80's when only a hand full of diehards showed up to ski the "painted" upper cascade. also during the "truckin'" era. again a small group of diehards. now opening day is a big deal. guessing upwards of a thousand or more show up. you can't get away with 8" of slop. you need a quality product.

regarding SR. kudos if they do open but i'm already seeing brown on the jordan webcam w even warmer weather coming. very small window saturday overnight and then nothing for an extended period. guessing they'll pretty much be starting from scratch.

here's my video for those who haven't seen the "truckin" in action. saturday oct 24 1998. they opened on the 22nd after a very small window that surprised us that they were even able to open. and yeah it was fun. last shot in the video is from the peak looking down. the trail was already cooked and they didn't open sunday.

killington only goes back to 1987 on their website. the latest was 2006 on november 23 (ttb no WC). through the late 70's and 80's, they were open in early october. guessing in the earliest days, some years were probably later than nov 23.

here's the chart: https://www.killington.com/the-mountain ... open-close

believe the last season of "truckin" was 1999/00. after that it was top-to-bottom openings and you can see the later dates depending on mother nature's cooperation until the stairs went in for i believe the 2010 season.

GET READY FOR FIRST CHAIR
Get ready to knock off your cobwebs. Grab your skis, dust off your boots, and dig out the rest of your gear. Tomorrow, October 31, we start the 2024/25 season. Mother nature has cooperated the last few days and we have done our part to get snow on the ground.

Join us at Barker Basin to access T2 off of the Locke Mountain Triple for a day of skiing. Open to all New England, Ikon, and Mountain Collective Passholders, including all Ticket Packs; now is the time to Find Your Happy Place and claim your spot when we start spinning the lift.

This isn't your normal Opening Day Fan-Fare, we really just want to start skiing as much as you. Let's have the most fun possible by dressing up for Halloween and laying some turns. It is going to be a bueatiful day, and we can't wait to share it with you.

The lift spins from 10AM-2PM. There will be reduced skier services, so be sure to read the Mountain Report for the most up-to-date information.

This could've been us. I'm quoting Highway Star here. Killington = Epic Fail.

Why does it have to be? Got an inkling to ski rocks and wait 45 minutes between runs?

More power to them for not letting the snow go to waste but be realistic, this is just a pecker measuring contest with no bearing on the overall season. Killington has shown they have no interest in whipping it out just to zip it back up.

Yes if the weather in Vermont had been colder and if anyone other than you thought opening for one day was a good idea.

It's all this Newpy and maybe a bit of a welcome to the Mountain Collective crowd too as SR just jumped onto that pass product joining sister resorts SL and BS. They are included in valid passes tomorrow.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
If only one of them were Snoloco. Since it's Maine, I'll try to work my self up to a Susan Collins level of "concern". And somewhere Jeremy Clarkson is going "Oh no!....Anyway...."
