Isn't the snowmaking pond water still too warm, and the ground too warm (both per Mike)? Or was that just sh*t?

The ground and the pond are going to be "too warm" right into December if the weather pattern doesn't change. That doesn't mean you can hold off snowmaking forever and wait for ideal conditions on that front. They will need to begin soon albeit less efficiently. Everyone is battling the same issues.

Re: Opening , TTB and World Cup - 2024
yeah we're all weathermen here ... agree w newpy, seeing a window of 24-36 hrs overnight friday into daybreak sunday depending how much they wanna push it w a bit of a warmup sat afternoon that maybe they can soldier through. high winds early could be a factor.
at this point, it's damn the torpedoes. they have to get something on the ground and hope they retain a reasonable amount. tuesday doesn't look to be cold long enough to fire them up and after that it could be another week as temps continue to hover in that above marginal range. but beggars can't be choosy.

And now it’s official:
Mother Nature is finally giving us a window to start making snow this weekend and we are primed and ready to let our new high-efficiency snow guns do their magic! The snowmaking team will fire up the guns on North Ridge and Superstar sometime late Friday night and we hope to keep them running as much as possible throughout the weekend. We will take a break early next week as it is expected to warm up, but our snowmaking team will seek to take full advantage of cold temps whenever the opportunity presents itself. We do not yet have a planned date for Opening Day, so check back here for more updates. We can't wait to get this party started!

It’s “bored”.
Re: Opening , TTB and World Cup - 2024
I think that hosting the WC [during Thanksgiving] is both a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, it is great publicity for the mountain and the branded images generated have long lasting impact. The event creates lots of excitement and is a great wake-up call that the season has "officially" started. There's also the intangible benefits of being associated with a WC event and boosting the mountain's image. Of course having to cancel the event, especially because of lack of snow, has the opposite effect.
On the other hand, it's a logistical distraction from getting the mountain up and running for the majority of people who are more interested in skiing than the race. There's also a fickle woman, named Mother Nature who isn't always cooperative in November. Waiting for Old Man Winter to arrive in order to host the event, might be a better fit for just about everyone except the Marketing Department.
Northeast skiing in November is frequently marginal and improves quickly with cold temperatures, so why not hold the event later in the season?

I spend a little time on the mountain, spend a little time on the hill.

Because when Killington got the event it was when this early slot was available due to their snowmaking abilities. They are unlikely to be able to get a later one.

Yeah, let's close the superstar pod later in the season. That won't complicate getting around the mountain.Pushgears wrote: ↑Nov 8th, '24, 04:48 I think that hosting the WC [during Thanksgiving] is both a blessing and a curse.
