Sunday 11/24
Transformer blew. Don’t ski down. Both lifts offline. Out loading via diesel on both lifts. This appears to be on GMP, not Killington.

LIFT HOLD
Last Updated: November 24, 2024 -- 9:38 am
The K-1 Gondola and North Ridge Quad are on hold due to an electrical issue, no time estimate.

Wow this has been a tough early season on many fronts. Hope Turkey storm delivers and at least changes the snow situation.
Re: Sunday 11/24
At least this time it wasn’t an employee shooting Mylar streamers into the power lines like a few years ago.

Re: Sunday 11/24
well that was fun ... probably not. interesting ... yes. never had that happen before ... definitely.
all dressed up w somewhere to go. full corral at the open. friend said bigger crowd than yesterday. first run started innocently enough. GN nice mid-winter groom. lower rime already hacked & cookied up.
riding the lift, guy sitting next to me says "wow there's a fire". looking in the distance saw nothing. then saw flames and smoke coming from the top of an electrical pole - powerline 2nd pole down from GN. not good. when we got to the top we reported it to patrol. it seemed it was the first they heard of it. thinking it wasn't a big deal. skied down. hey what could go wrong. stopped at the GN intersection where we saw the flames and heard what sounded like a shot. ran into rogman there. apparently the transformer or fuse blew. lift came to a screeching stop. ski day over. k1 also down. hung w patrol. diesel to upload people out. gmp on the way. took a while. can't confirm but heard that 2 other transformers blew. lots of folks skied down. i waited out it out. a friend who skied it said it was terrible. totally trashed his skis.
anyway 2 runs in the books. shoulda gone w snoloco to whiteface. next time

thank god this fire happened after all that precipitation and not before. we could of potentially ended up with a forest fire on our hands.
friend said they adventure skied to the bottom via snowdon and made it out unscathed. when i mentioned the rumor from another friend about ttb tomorrow, he said no way. well see.

I think Killington owns all the poles, wires, and transformers on the mnt and they have a contract with GMP to maintain the infrastructure.

Re: Sunday 11/24
I didn't go to Whiteface today. I went to Belleayre, which is on the same pass. Of the 3 days, Killington and Whiteface only operated normally on Saturday. On Friday, Whiteface closed early due to wind, and Killington didn't open till around 2 due to ice. On Sunday, Whiteface didn't open till around 1:30 due to ice, and Killington was closed all day due to a transformer failure.
These mishaps all show how important it is to get terrain expanded and get off of downloading. At both resorts, with the current terrain and lifts, there are too many single points of failure that close the whole mountain.

They probably should have all 155 trails and 21 lifts open by now for redundancy against freak accidents.

Re: Sunday 11/24
With the weather challenges redundancy with impossible. Lower elevations have had challenging temps... to put it lightly! That being said, as a mountain ops employee I looked at the summit quad at whiteface and was thinking what a pain that would be to deice!snoloco wrote: ↑Nov 24th, '24, 21:21I didn't go to Whiteface today.
