You know what's odd, "cool" wasn't even a thing at my HS of 2500 people. There were just clicks and each was different in their own right, but no clearly "cool" people.SkiDork wrote:The topic of "cool" is very important to HS because in his mind he's still in High School (get it - HS)... Just an observation...

My daughter's (Snowprincess) 1st grade teacher sent home a note that she's involved with a click that is hurting the feelings of some other girls in the class, yadda yadda...
Ummmm.... You're a freakin teacher and you don't know the word is clique?

I don't think the topic of "cool" has come up in any discussions of mine at work, business engagements, conferences, seminars, or any of the other activities I've experienced post-graduation from college.
Maybe VT is different?
Every person is unique, no one is in a place to judge others. I admit, I'm guilty of it at times, but I try very hard not to do so.
Like SkiDork, I'm also a Dork and I enjoy it very much and it's help create a great career
Hey, I could really care less that you guys don't care about being cool. It is a very complcated issue, and filled with paradoxes. People do not discuss it....it's like fight club. But is does have an effect on your social life and your work.SkiDork wrote:The topic of "cool" is very important to HS because in his mind he's still in High School (get it - HS)... Part of being cool is not caring what people think.....but that doesn't mean that you're cool automaticly, since most dorkly people don't care what other people think. Being cool does not automaticly equate with being popular either.
It has much more to do with lameness......if you are lame, and don't care what other people think, then you are just lame. If you are lame and you do care what other people think, then that makes you twice as lame. If you are not lame, but are concerned about what people think, that makes you sort of cool, but not really. The key is to not be lame, and know it, and not give a rat's ass what anybody thinks......that's real cool.
In conclusion: Don't be lame!!!!!!

If I'm not careful, I might look that dude in a couple weeks........explaining "cool" to people on an internet forum is negatively effecting my coolness in a pretty big way.

No doubt some "cliques" bullied other "cliques", but the "cool" crowd is a thing of the past, IMHO. Today, you're either the hunter or the hunted ... as bad as that sounds.SkiDork wrote: I've gotta throw the flag here...

Luckily, I'm not a teach just a lowly Techie

As for your "cool" post HS, surely you kid. I have never EVER seen anyone give that kind of description of being "cool" while simultaneously referring to themselves as "cool".

i personally have no problem with you. i think that when you concentrate on the mountain and your experiences and hypothetical improvements you are a solid contributing member who makes kzone a better place. i do not get why you have so many problems with many members here. if they slight you whether actual or perceived, just ignore it. that is the cool thing to so. people like humpty would not exist if you did not respond to them. loosen up, enjoy life, take as much postives as you can from others and think pow!

HS seems to think that 'cool' is like being the Fonz (In the early years of the show). A little bit outlaw, women fall at his feet with the snap of the finger, he's tough and has proven it so he commands respect, wears cool clothing, like a biker jacket, can fix things with an expert thump of his hand, has a gang of eager suplicants to hold court with, and is admired without seemingly even caring.Highway Star wrote:

What we find from both the Fonz, and from HS, is that under the layers of bravado are insecurity. We all have feeings of insecurity at times, but Fonz types are petrified of ever letting the slightest crack show. They have a greater insecurity. They have the same need to be liked as all of us while loudly claiming they don't care.
So lets try a different cool/not cool list. And yes HS, whether you like to hear it or not, and are willing to admit it out loud or not, being 'cool' ultimately rides on the rails of being liked by others.
Having a social life is cool. This means people want to and enjoy spending time with you.
Being good at something is cool.
Working at bettering yourself is cool.
Being loved by someone you look up to is cool.
Acomplishing goals you set for yourself is cool.
Caring about people is cool.
Caring about your friends more is cool.
Being a trend setter is cool. This is difficult because being a trend setter means being the first to do/wear something, and if it doesn't catch on then it is not cool. This may be one of the reasons HS has trouble defining cool, because in this sense it changes. What doesn't change is the vision, talent, and hutzpah it takes to be a trend setter.
Self confidence is cool, and the only route to it is to truly like yourself.
Being generous with others is cool.
Having some humilty is cool, because everyone else knows you are NOT a genius.
Being honest is cool, then people know they can depend on you.
Bragging is not cool. People know if they think you're cool already or not.
Not caring about other people is not cool. This includes challenging them to accept danger levels in a ski off that you know include the likelyhood of injury. You may think that it is cool to care only about your friends, and not others, but how you treat others that do not matter to you is the true reflection of how you really view everyone. Once your friends discover this, you will lose their friendship, and that is not cool.
Threatening other people is not cool. Fear or hostility is not the same thing as admiration.
Yelling or name calling to get your point across is not cool. Your point stands on its own merits, the name calling makes you look juvenile.
Trying to find your uniqueness and identity through defiance is not cool.
Trying to fit into every group, trend and fashion isn't cool, you lose your identity that way.
Excessive laziness or lack of ambition is not cool.
Trying to be liked by everyone is not cool, mainly because it is not possible.
So, Highway Star, how cool are you?
