The best in the east?

Post by XtremeJibber2001 »

So many of you have been talking about who is the "best" in the east overall, but it would be interesting to separate them in categories such as terrain, conditions, town, apres-ski, etc.

My buddies and I have actually been debating something similar regarding our ski vacation for the coming winter.

My list looks like this:
Stowe
Killington
SR
.....

My buddies have an issue with "trail count". For example, they don't like Stowe only because the number of trails offered are very few (of course not realizing when we are at K we ski the same 50 trails).

Most of my buddies are looking for a mountain with 75+ trails and a killer apres-ski scene (I don't view K's apres-ski scene as stellar). Now, they're thinking about Tremblant and Mont-Ste-Anne.

What say you? I guess in addition to your list, I'm just seeking advice about resorts in Montreal and Maine.

Your buddies should go to Killington.

Your buddies are looking for something that does not exist on the east coast. Are they also looking for a wealthy brilliant movie actress that skis and will date them?

not sure what you're looking for ... even in those lame ski magazine polls, the one category nationwide that k gets the highest marks for is apres-ski - usually in the top ten.

What about Tremblant? I thought they had a "village" at the base that was somewhat resembled those in the west?

I think they're being a bit ignorant, but what do I know.

IMHO, their fascination with Tremblant etc is because Montreal is close by, but I think it's still an hour or so.

If you don't care about having Long Island at the base, Sugarbush is the best all around mountain in the East.

Highway Star actually had a good post on this over on epicski. He points to Mt Greylock Ski Club, in Williamstown, MA.

http://www.mtgreylockskiclub.com/

There's some great stuff on their website. It's like a step back in time 50-70 years.

Season's Pass: $60. Sixty. Six- Oh. For the season
Vertical Drop: 300 or 350, we're not quite sure.
2 bathrooms, er outhouses.
"We have no food service at the Club. Please feel free to bring your lunch."
"The final section of Roaring Brook Road leading up to the Ski Club is narrow. For safety, it is one-way up until 2:30 PM and one-way down after 2:30 PM on ski days. "
"Ride it if you can! To our knowledge, Tow #1 is the longest (1300 feet) and fastest (18 feet per second) rope tow in New England."

Great to know a place like this still exists.

I went to Jay a few times this past season and wasn't impressed...
They had some nice glades, but other then that there wasn't anything steep or "interesting" to me.
The lodge was run down, and the tram is the worst thing ive ever been on. You have to wait about 15 minutes in the stairwell for the tram to come, and then you have to be able to fit on, or you wait another 15 minutes. When you get on, your standing on top of each other for the ride up... I hated it, and would be glad to never get on the thing with 59 other people (I think the cap. was 60.)
Most of the employees were not even wearing any sort of "uniform" and the grooming wasn't incredible, but not "bad" either. The food was very bad... I find the food at Killington to be pretty good, I dont know why anyone complains about it.... Jay also doesn't have a whole lotta terrain either compared to other resorts... and no matter how "epic" people say the glades are, I think that the shear size of Killington being 7 different mountains, spread apparently over 10 miles from edge to edge, that Killington has a ton more woods, many not mapped, but are awesome. Jay also has tons of windholds, always, Killington, up until this year for whatever reason, rarely has had any.
Jay doesn't stand in a chance as being the best in the east, in my opinion.

I've never been there myself, but my brother has been a few times. Heard about it way before NELSAP. He said it's pretty good skiing.

If you look at the market data, the tiny ski resorts out there are actually doing pretty well. Greylock is about the smallest of the small though.

Jay is MY kind of place

I don't care about food, grooming, or fast lifts

and jays best stuff requires more effort then the typical person is willing to commit to meaning there's always good snow to be had a little further out
Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.

if you are taking apres into consideration SR is off the list
if the mt matters the loaf goes way ahead of it too but also loses on apres
