advice on tahoe trip
with all the dumpage going on in tahoe this year, we're thinking this is the year to hit it. i know many k-zoners are fans of kirkwood. what other areas do you folks recommend? we prefer the smorgasbord approach of hitting maybe 4 or 5 areas in a week. where is the best place to stay to access as many of the best areas as possible?

When we went last year we split a suite at the Forest Inn Suites. It was a really nice place and had wonderful views. You could walk to the Heavenly gondola. I think a 2 bedroom 2 bath place was $168/night. It had a full kitchen, nice livingroom area and a balcony.
I think we had just under an hour drive to k-wood. So we hit k-wood and heavenly. Then we moved to the Best Western in Truckee. That was a decent place to stay. Just minutes from Squaw and Alpine meadows. The BW was way cheap too. But clean and okay. Good breakfast included too.
When you thinking of going?
Sprite

Yup, and you definitely gotta rent a car. Can't wait to do it again! I loved k-wood best but am glad I visited all those places.
Each resort is so different, and so great in their own way. It's hard to believe they are all in the same place because they really vary so vastly in terrain, appearance, and atmosphere.

Yup, what Sprite said. I've also heard that Sugar Bowl is pretty cool too on the North Shore. You'll definitely love Kirkweed and Alpine Ghettos though, two lesser known resorts with a lot of stuff to play on. Don't hit Squaw or Heavenly on the weekends, they're the most popular.
If you REALLY want the homegrown resort, hit Homewood. I had a pretty good time there and the views are amazing!

Mmmmmm, sidecountry....
Re: advice on tahoe trip
personally i would concentrate either on the south OR north shore, not both. these mountains are huge. you can't possibly ski the whole mtn, much less find any of the goods, in one day. it'll also give ya a reason to go back. plus why drive if ya don't have to?skiadikt wrote:with all the dumpage going on in tahoe this year, we're thinking this is the year to hit it. i know many k-zoners are fans of kirkwood. what other areas do you folks recommend? we prefer the smorgasbord approach of hitting maybe 4 or 5 areas in a week. where is the best place to stay to access as many of the best areas as possible?

When I went to Tahoe many years ago we stayed on the South Shore. We skied Heavenly, Kirkwood, Squaw and Alpine Meadows. I believe it took a little over an hour to get to Squaw from the South Shore but we lucked out that the road was not closed. What we liked about staying on the South Shore was being able to hit the casinos at night. I am not much of a gambler but the crew I was with enjoyed going to the casinos.skiadikt wrote:with all the dumpage going on in tahoe this year, we're thinking this is the year to hit it. i know many k-zoners are fans of kirkwood. what other areas do you folks recommend? we prefer the smorgasbord approach of hitting maybe 4 or 5 areas in a week. where is the best place to stay to access as many of the best areas as possible?

Kirkwood, Squaw, Alpine, Mt Rose are my favorites. Mt Rose is a gem that a lot of people miss - and they opened some new really sick terrain this year if that is your thing...
Incline village is good for the north shore resorts, but it may be difficult to get to the south shore resorts from there because the road is usually closed so you have to go around the lake. Reno is always an option and maybe you can win some money and pay for those lift passes!
