Technical Shell Suggestion's?

I am in the market for a Men's Technical Shell.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I ski mostly northeast over 30 days a year.

I was hoping to get something with the following requirements.

1) Helmet Compatible Hood. (Removable would be nice)
2) Snow Skirt.
3) Taped Seams
4) Gortex
5) Under $400

The helmet compatible hood has me a bit confused as to why but other than that, just about every major manufacturer makes jackets with those features. Columbia, Mountain Hardware, Arc'teryx, North Face, etc.

You could check out http://www.backcountry.com for reviews too.

Nice jacket, but there ain't no running and hiding from ski patrol in that jacket... sh*t you could be on the peak, and your friends can find you from the parking lot!

yeah you got to go with either patroller red or something more neutral like brown or black if you're trying to duck the patrollers in the trees

not that I would EVER suggest something like that

to get the post back ON track

All 06/07 gear is 40-50% labor day weekend at the shops around K. Stop by and browse... Or look for last years stuff on ebay/online.

you'll probably want to check out the Program jacket as well, you give up the Gore Tex, but IMHO they're system 3 breathes MUCH better gives 80-95% of the waterproofing of gore tex, which means that unless you're out when its pouring BUCKETS you'll never notice the difference(except for the price)

but laser, EMS is the walmart for outdoor gear though. try looking at Patagonia. My significant other is looking at the mens rubicon--its puffy, but he wants that for a BC trip to BC in Jan. There are others if puffy isnt what your looking for. I like northface myself.

I use to all ways wear Loud gear (Just ask Mrs.G) but not no mo!
I just blend in and let my skiing talk 4 me.

Yeah Patagonia is fabulous, except like all the other companies they don't believe that anyone with a waist larger then 38 deserves to have technical clothing made for them.

As the manager of my local EMS put it "we make clothing for people who used be athletes, but now because of jobs/whatever they aren't as tiny as they used to be but they still want to get out there"

One of the reasons I want to switch to Gortex was last January being r*ined on. My jacket got so wet my cell phone died. However, my current jack is 8 years old.

If its 8 years old the DWR coating has worn off, any new shell gore tex or not would be a huge improvement. You could always try to pick up some NIKWAX and try to restore the waterproofing, but I think 8 years is long enough for a jacket

have you tried a soft shell? Much more comfy/breathable then a hard one but you give up something in the waterproof department. Snow and drizzle you're fine, but a full on drenching is going to be problematic. For BC skiing I'll generally wear a soft shell and toss in a unlined r*in jacket like the Marmot Pre-cip in my pack just in case it gets wet

But can a soft shell really stop the wind as well as Gortex. The South Ridge Triple can really be cold especially that last 10 towers.
