working/living at K ?

Post by schifty »

Need some local knowledge. Does Killington offer housing to it's seasonal workers? my 18 year old is looking to ski bum @ K this winter but he's not sure about how to make it happen. Any advise on best ski bum jobs greatly appreciated.

Thanks

the ski check is the perfect ski bum job. you get a free pass and a salary for doing nothing. if he needs extra loot he can get a job down in rut-vegas or something to supplement income.

K does not offer housing, they can connect you with available housing which is down inmendon and rutland now, where as they used to have rooms at the new hotel down the bottom of the access rd. also, the mtn doesnt pay much, at all. probably better off trying to get some kind of restaurant job or night employment, so your kid can actually ski or ride during the day...

If your kid is looking to be a ski bum, why is he looking on the East Coast?

Everyone knows that you ski bum out west!!

hey what can I say??? he won...ill give him a chance...

Lets see about all the "change" he referred to...

time for rhetoric is OVER....put up or shut up time has arrived..

either way, no matter who won last night, its a $hitstorm..

I am of the belief that we are to back our elected official even if we didnt want that particular person. I wish more were of that belief but alas some just like to bash and bash and bash..

He has a majority democratic house and congress he shouldnt have any trouble getting whatever his "plan" is through, so only time will tell.

1st rule of ski bum employment and housing is show up. It is far more difficult to get and secure advance long distance arrangements for entry level jobs and cheap scour the bushes housing. Many areas won't hire if you don't have housing, as they know that is key. They also want to see you in front of their desk, not on a phone line on a maybe basis. You'll get a maybe answer that way. Instructor and patrol jobs are competitive. Lift and lodge jobs not very.

In the east, there are a lot of weekend workers as well, and they are ok if you commute for that.

This is how it was when I was doing the ski thing. I doubt it's changed much, except for the recent trend towards alien worker programs.

My $0.02 after doing it: First go out west, if you going to be a ski bum why here? I have done both coasts. My one year at K there were many days were it was too icy or cold that I did not go to the mountain - once for over a week. Just wasn’t worth it. In Utah, I skied everyday that I was free of responsibilities.

Second jobs are easy to find in a ski town. When I went to Park City I had 4 jobs by the end of my second day. Housing is the opposite. It took a month. In the meantime I was living in my car - actually was not that bad. Alta has a deal were you work in the cafeteria you get free lodging, but it is probably too late for that now.

From experience, forgo working on the mountain for the free lift pass. Get a job working tables at night and buy your own pass. More time to ski, and you make more $. Nothing worse than watching other people ski on a powder day, and waiting for your 15 minute break after everything is tracked out - then being "more" poor on top of it. Plus the 6- day a week schedule. On your day off, the last thing you want to do is go to the mountain.
