Pico Adventure Center... Is No More

Post by JerseyGuy »

Interesting timing: exactly one year to the day since PowdrKillington quietly canned Tommy Boy (the Wednesday before the Dew Tour), PowdrKillington quietly cans half of their summer activities (the Wednesday before the Dew Tour):
PowdrKillington wrote:Pico Mountain has announced that they will cease to operate the Pico Mountain Summer Adventure center starting next summer. This includes mini-golf, climbing walls, horseback riding, bungee trampoline and the Alpine Slides. The closure is due to declining interest in the Adventure Center by guests and subsequent poor revenue generation.

The Disc Golf venue that was in place at Pico will be re-located to the K-1 base area at Killington to augment the new Roaring Brook Umbrella Bar, Mountain Biking, hiking and K-1 Express Gondola summer activities.

"The curtailment of summer operations at Pico Mountain in no way affects the commitment of the ski area to its winter operations. Pico Mountain has enjoyed substantial growth in skier visits and winter revenue over the last several years and has been actively reinvesting in the infrastructure as it relates to winter operations," said Tracy Taylor, director of operations for Pico Mountain.

Kind of funny in that Bromley and their summer adventure park seems to be expanding a bit each year, and the couple of times my kids practically INSIST I take them there every summer, its always had a very solid crowd. Different target audience?? Different corporate philosophy?? Different marketing campaign?? Who knows?? :?:

you're making too much of the timing. nonetheless when other resorts are trying to grow their summer business adding ziplines etc, powdr's cutting it back. you'd think they could make a go of the alpine slide unless the thing got totally trashed by irene. however consolidation at one base area does make business sense.

Kinda' difficult to capture share from huge Waterpark buzz at Jay and the WooHoo OkemoCoaster.
Gotta believe the 'bungie thing' could relocate to K1 base ... assuming they have the proper grease available

Exactly which 2 1/2 seasons are we leveraging in 2012?
Pico summer option was nice, but the venue is beat-up.

I don't get it.....are you saying that with the summer park they were a 2-1/2 season resort? Because now they are down to one.

Maybe the town of Killington could raise the Local Option Tax and buy the Pico Adventure Center.

I'm 100% convinced that Chris Nyberg would slam Killington completely shut from May 1 to November 1 if the lease with the state didn't require that he operate a lift in the summer for the tourists. Maybe the couple of weeks during peak foliage season. (I'm ignoring wedding business which will happen once they build the new day lodge at the top)

Could you really blame him considering that they must do very little business in the summer.

I love how they say Pico Mountain made the decision and put Tracy Taylor's name on the announcement, like it was his call.

That sucks. Places like Hunter, Catamount, and Bromely are packed because they are adding new and interesting activities. Meanwhile Killington just lets their Summer programs atrophy until they can justify axing them.

It's too bad, those alpine slides are way more fun than Okemo's crappy coaster.

Summer business has been growing as a result of EDT activity as well as increased marketing in Florida. On weekends in the summer, this place is reasonably busy - not winter busy by any means but much busier than it has been over recent years.

But I doubt the stereotypical Florida visitor is interested in the "Adventure" center.

While I'm sure Pico homeowners won't be happy, it was incredibly stupid to split their summer activities in half, separated by a 20 min drive.

Put them at Killington with the rest of the Summer activities, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of people up there to MTB/hike/go for a lift ride to stop in and do something as well, or their kids will, etc.

If they had any clue they would relocate the alpine slide to Killington. It could be longer and more exciting starting from the new peak lodge. In my opinion the alpine slide is more fun then the Okemo Coaster, been on both. Never liked the snowshed lodge for summer activities at Killington, it will never be the main base area in my mind.
