Dangerous Skiers/Riders Today

Post by skier123 »

A mix of the ice, crazy college kids, and incompetent asians (not to be racist but it is a fact) made for a very dangerous day on the slopes today. 2 out of 4 of the people I was skiing with were taken out today, and we are all very skilled skiers. Hopefully they can open more trails so this problem dosent persist.

Welcome to Killington. If you don't want to get hit, you need to be more careful. I posted this 5 years ago:

I haven't hit or been hit by anyone in a number of years, so let me give a bit of advice.

Be extremely careful on runouts and intersections, this includes lower bunny buster, bottom of lower east fall/canyon quad, lower bittersweet, middle great northern, etc. These are areas where low advanced and intermediates may be skiing too fast for their own good, and gapers are standing around, stopping randomly, or turning erraticly. It is way to easy to get trapped between traffic and variable terrain/conditions - what might be a near miss situation for an expert is more likely to be a collision for a low advanced skier skiing at the edge of their ablity. The majority of collisions occur when you have a high intermediate low advanced skier going too fast on a busy, relatively mild pitch/runout - they are not capable of changing direction quickly enough when someone they are overtaking does something they don't (have the experience to) predict.

If it is too crowded, stop in a safe spot, gradually, without doing anything erratic. Always look up the hill when stopped...always, make eye with people coming towards you and prepare to get out of the way. If you have to stop in a choke point, stop behind an orange slow sign. If skiing at a moderate pace, keep you turns short and proceed in a predictable line. Look over your shoulder before making a major direction change. Avoid GS turns unless the trail is relatively uncrowded and you are faster than everyone else. If an expert, make sure the trail is not too crowded, there are no other fast skiers, then ski it faster than everyone else while still being 100% in control.

Asians is to be capitalized please. Orientals is also acceptable. Otherwise just refer to them the way Tyrolean does; chinks, gooks, slopes, zips, tojos, dot heads, etc.

Butt hey, Wayne Wong was a pretty good skiing chinaman, so don't group them all together.

Mao, out.

Unfortunately one of the people hit was a 10 year old girl. Can't really expect her to be this aware but I will teach her best I can...
Thanks for the advice though and 2 of those places are where we got hit/almost hit, and I will keep it in mind.

Don't make major direction/speed changes or cross a slope without looking behind you.

Stop where you are clearly visible, easily avoidable, and look up hill while stopped.

Every time I stop on a somewhat busy trail, I try to do it above or around a pole/sign/bambo/etc, making myself one obstacle with the object. Except when there is a jump there, etc.

When overtaking, I will yell out (Heads UP! or HEY! - LOUD) if I can't predict where someone is going to be or if they start traversing or make some sort of erratic move across slope without looking behind them. But obviously give plenty of space to begin with.

Overall, be constantly alert to who is around you on the trail, what they are about to do, and what you plan to do.

Skier's responsibility code and legalities aside, if you are hit by another skier, it is your own fault because you are NOT doing enough to prevent yourself from being hit. You have no control over other skiers, and complaining about it on the internet isn't going to help.
IMHO, don't take kids out in these conditions unless they are very good and know how to handle skiing in a crowd.

She skis double black diamonds in Aspen Colorado, plenty good. She was hit by a man who didn;t know how to stop and went straight into her. She was skiing cautiously because of the ice and was hit from behind. I agree with your point that being hit is preventable however I think the bigger problem is if you don't know how to stop stay on the bunny hill.

There is no open "bunny hill" slope open, so the beginners are out there with everyone else.

Whatever you say. While i will say that is mildly racist, there is no doubt a trend between the Asian people that frequent killington over Christmas and bad skiing. No i do not support trump, and am not this way about most things but for things this obvious i make an exception.

You can't state facts anymore? They like to stop in large groups in the middle of trails.

Do the Asians do Blacks? Or can they not handle them? I only see them on Great Northern.

Large numbers of economically privileged winter visitors is the oil that keep the machine running. I welcome all that are come to my mountain with the goal of winter fun. Try to be a good host so that they may enjoy Killington as much as I do.

You may be out on limb calling the college aged crowd crazy as there is no safe zone for them to retreat to. Remember in their world they are the victim and you are the villain. Once you understand your place harmony will be restored.

If you are a skilled skier try staying out of the scraped off main slope and make your turns on all the pushed piles of loose stuff off on the sides.
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine.
