K vs Okemo open acres today
Okemo is reporting 383 acres open while K is reporting 250...
but we all know how boring those 383 acres are....

Re: K vs Okemo open acres today
Yeah, K definitely has way more miles of trails open than Okemo. I like to see miles open reported in the East more than the acres because of so many narrow type trails. Okemo doesn't really have that many narrow trails. Mostly shorter superwide trails so I can see why they would report acres.
Re: K vs Okemo open acres today
I think everyone should go to Okemo. It's way bigger and there are no crowds there.
Where is Happy Hour ?
Re: K vs Okemo open acres today
Ya Okemo does not post miles open, probably for the reason you stated.
Re: K vs Okemo open acres today
I live in Ludlow and have passes at both Okemo & Killington. Both mountains are well run, and when it comes to snow making and the ability to deliver a good product when mother nature sucks, both are at or near the top of any mountain in the country.
That being said, trying to compare trail counts, acres open, miles etc, between Okemo and Killington is really comparing apples and oranges. The amount of snow it takes to open a trail like Superstar would open 5-8 trails at Okemo.. Outer Limits? good grief, Okemo could cover all of Jackson Gore with the amount of snow it takes to cover OL edge to edge.. . Assuming both mountains were producing at equal capacity, Okemo is almost always going to have more terrain open that Killington. That doesn't mean Okemo's doing anything better. Flat mountains are a lot easier to cover than steeper mountains.
it's the same reason I hear people at Okemo saying how much better the conditions are at Okemo than at Killington & how icy it is at Killington.. DUHHH, Killington is steeper. The few short decent pitches Okemo has are just as icy. Flat trails don't often get all that icy.
Bottom line, they cater to very different demographics and both do a great job at what they do. No need to compare which mountain has what open. Considering the lack of snow so far this year, anyone living in this area or who comes to this area to ski should be thrilled we have 2 big mountains very close to each other that excel at what they do. Between the 2, something for everyone.

The consensus of this thread seems to be that length is better than girth.

Haven't skied Okemo in years but skied quite a bit there in the past. My memory is that Okemo is even more icy than K. Might have something to do with the flat terrain not draining as well after a non frozen event.Skizoo wrote:it's the same reason I hear people at Okemo saying how much better the conditions are at Okemo than at Killington & how icy it is at Killington.. I was more referring to how skiers of lesser ability perceive steeper trails. Those with less skill perceive steeper as being icier. steeper trails tend to get skied off faster when conditions are marginal, and they don't have the skill to comfortably ski a firm steep trail. So they think it is icy. I hear it all the time when skiing at Okemo, but those saying this tend not to be very good skiers. Logged couple dozen miles in every direction today.
Will take miles of vert over sleepy flat acres any day.

Re: K vs Okemo open acres today
Hit the 527 acres of curbed Okemo wall to wall groomed terrain today. The Beast is checking in with 493 acres. Enjoyed the heated seats on the 6 pack. Pulled the bubble down on the new quad bubble chair. Marveled at the top shelf infrastructure our neighbor to the south supports. Brand new Sunshine Quad was running on the South side with construction of another new day lodge with more slope side lodging as the never ending expansion marches on. Took our final run on the Skyeship just to look at my favorite view of Okemo from Skye Peak.

I'll toss this out for debate.
Less snowboarders at Okemo, especially the ones that can't turn and just bulldoze down the mountain.

Goes to show, you don't never know
Watch each card you play, and play it slow
Don't you let that deal go down
Don't you let that deal go down
Looks like its going down no matter what I do !!!

Everyone is a good skier at Okemo. Lack of challenge will do that.

Bad skiers are just as bad on flat terrain, just not as dangeroussteamboat1 wrote:Say what?Skizoo wrote:I was more referring to how skiers of lesser ability perceive steeper trails. Nope, everyone at Okemo skis 100mph because that's the only way to get a thrill.Skizoo wrote:Bad skiers are just as bad on flat terrain, just not as dangeroussteamboat1 wrote:Say what?Skizoo wrote:I was more referring to how skiers of lesser ability perceive steeper trails.
