Killington Summer Plans
The resort, town and KPAA held a meeting yesterday afternoon at which each reviewed progress to date in growing summer business and additional plans for this summer. From what I can recall (I didn't take notes) they are planning a new zip line on Snowshed along with a jump platform with options to jump at the 15' and 30' levels, and will also add a tubing run. New mountain bike trails will be added at Rams Head and a walking/jogging trail will be added around Snowshed Pond. There will also be a trail added from the Welcome Center over to Kent Pond. The Cooler in the Mountains Saturday concert series will be expanded by one additional weekend, starting right after the Wine Fest weekend in July. Summer camp activities for kids starting at 5 years old will be available by the day, week or full season with residents (and non-resident property owners) getting a good discount on the programs. Looking past this summer to 2017/2018, they are working on a multi-stage zip line from the peak down to Snowshed.
No plans were announced for next winter, although they will be removing one of the two Snowshed double chairs this summer. (I don't recall exactly why.) Mike did show slides showing a large drop in skier visits this season, much as one would expect given the awful winter weather we've endured. The irony of holding a summer announcement meeting on the day with the season's largest snowfall was not lost on anyone.
Thanks to the hosts for the food and drink following the meeting. It was certainly a large turnout and I think everyone who attended came away feeling that the Killington region is moving in the right direction for the summer, with almost every weekend between Memorial Day and Columbus Day having activities already scheduled.

that future zipline is going to be quite something.... Apparently it will be a couple hundred ( or some crazy number) feet above the ground at its highest point...

Thanks Bubba,
I've heard "on the street" that there was going to be a couple or few miles of single track added over near Kent Pond. Was there any additional mention of this? Or is this the trail that goes from the welcome center to Kent Pond?

Re: Killington Summer Plans
If I recall correctly, it will be around 300' above ground at its highest point and people will reach speeds close to 70 mph. Summer sales of adult diapers at Killington will soar.madhatter wrote:Bubba wrote:The resort, town and KPAA held a meeting yesterday afternoon at which each reviewed progress to date in growing summer business and additional plans for this summer. I don't recall hearing anything at the meeting but, then again, I was distracted for a while by the horrific sight of Chandler Burgess coming in as the "King of Spring" wearing a speedo, a cape and a crown.boston_e wrote:Thanks Bubba,

Re: Killington Summer Plans
Removing another lift without remplacent? Typical Powdr, and no it's not going to South Ridge. Both are like 20 years older than the original lift was.
Re: Killington Summer Plans
it's going to take quite some time to evolve from the 60-80's developed K into the K of the future... It took a long time just to get here There's a lot of things that need changin' and fixin' at K and it's not a blank slate with very few restrictions anymore either...The additional publicity, increased visits and revenue from "summer K" will no doubt benefit " winter K" along the way...snoloco wrote:Removing another lift without remplacent? Normally I would find a lift removal without replacement to be a source of frustration... but really, will anyone miss one of the old snowshed doubles?snoloco wrote:Removing another lift without remplacent? Re: Killington Summer Plans
Just saying that they're keeping the trend going. They don't really need both on 95% of the days, in fact this year, the Snowshed Express seemed to be able to handle most of the crowd on its own, even on weekends.
Killington has 19 aerial lifts, assuming the removal of a Snowshed Double and Pico has 6. If a new South Ridge lift is built, Killington will have 20. Combined they'd have 26. Replace a lift every 2 years and they'll have 52 years to replace everything. Think the Skye Peak Express can operate for 52 more years, on top of the 6 it already has? It would be as old as the Snowdon Poma is now. They have built two lifts since 1997, 19 years ago. They have removed 5, assuming a Snowshed Double comes out this summer. That is not sustainable and they need to pick up the pace on lift upgrades.

They are coupled, are they not? I want to see how this is going to work.Bubba wrote:No plans were announced for next winter, although they will be removing one of the two Snowshed double chairs this summer.

Removal of one of the Snowshed doubles is a non-event. They are only backups to the Quad. I suspect it doesn't justify the cost to maintain and certify both.
K certainly didn't generate much if any net cash flow this year. But both Copper and Mt. Bachelor had good snow years. It would be nice if some of that western money came east this year.

It has gone the other way, so yes, send some back East. The only new lift I have heard going in this year is over at Okemo.PinnacleJim wrote:Removal of one of the Snowshed doubles is a non-event. They are only backups to the Quad. I suspect it doesn't justify the cost to maintain and certify both.

Thanks for the report - Heard it was pretty upbeat besides mother nature hammering everyone this year.
Re: Killington Summer Plans
Wasn't something mentioned about moving one of the UBars to Snowshed?
