Did anyone stay around for the 2:pm lift opening?
Re: Friday 11/22/24
Snow was sticky, not too bad. I enjoyed my runs. Stairway was nicely shoveled. That probably accounted for part of the opening delay.

It doesn't take 5 hours to shovel the walkway. How's staffing this year? I put my money on that being the problem, I doubt most of the international workers are there yet
Re: Friday 11/22/24
and how many times have i been ridiculed on kzone for pointing out the issue of relying on J1 staff to run a resort? if they didnt pay poverty wages they wouldnt need to import cheap labor...daytripper wrote: ↑Nov 22nd, '24, 17:33 It doesn't take 5 hours to shovel the walkway. that being said, i bet things were iced over like crazy given the weather when i left k last night, and even with full staffing it probably would of been a very late start. 2pm is pretty wild though.

The J1s aren't going to be climbing the K1 towers with mallets.
If the sensors were icing over after being cleared then there is nothing you can do except keep playing wackamole.

If they could not deice 2 lifts in a reasonable timeframe, then what happens when they have to deice all 17? Seems like they weren't prepared.

Use your brain kid, most wouldn't open.
Re: Friday 11/22/24
Or maybe they should've started the process before 8:59.

Per usual you got it all figured out junior.
Re: Friday 11/22/24
The only thing I have figured out is that it shouldn't take a resort with 17 lifts 5 hours to deice 2 of them and get open for the day. It's been a common theme the last few years that operations falls on its face at every weather event.
Re: Friday 11/22/24
snowloco, would you kindly stf...kindly stop? plenty of reliable people who are actually 'on the ground' and on site and well informed. that's the most valued info. make an effort to be self aware please.

Have you considered that the weather might have been actively icing the cable?
There are many mid season days that they are not able to run k1 at all due to weather. There are many mornings where only fixed grip lifts can run.
You don’t want your chair’s grip to slip!
Re: Friday 11/22/24
Well then, if that were the case, then if they had done a better job with snowmaking and been top to bottom (like Sunday River despite lower elevation), then they could have run the Snowdon Triple for backup. When only North Ridge is open, there is no redundancy. The longer into the season where that is the case, the more likely it is that weather events occur that disrupt lift operations. Instead of the minor inconvenience of riding the triple instead of the K1, the whole mountain was closed until the final 2 hours of the day.

“Unusual weather we’re having, ain’t it?” (Cowardly Lion) doesn’t quite capture the situation, but it is another example of the lingering bad luck Killington has faced this season in trying to get open for the public while also prepping for the World Cup.
Typical ice event is rainn accompanied with falling temperatures. The subsequent clear day of frigid weather leaves the towers with a coat of glass. It’s chipped off and operations resume.
This storm has been hovering around for days at the freezing mark, and yesterday dropped close to an inch of rainn/sleet that quickly adhered to whatever it touched. As fast as existing problems were cleared new ones formed. Had to be frustrating for the crew, even without the knowledge their work was for an entitled and ungrateful public that only complains about how slow they are. You couldn’t pay me enough to strap in and climb an icy tower. Not in broad daylight, let alone while getting pelted by sleet. It seems a bit callous to expect another person to risk life and limb in the pitch dark at 4AM just so those more fortunate can have their moment of recreation. Show some gratitude.
