Re: BIG Cat spotted
When exploring off the Outpost chair a couple weekends ago, I found a large cat den. Skiing out the ridgeline from Sidewinder, there is a small ledgey area, with abundant evergreen cover. A hole in the ledge is an obvious cave, and was surrounded by cat prints about the size of a baseball/softball....

Re: K1 Closing time
I've been a ski patroller for many years and at several areas. The convention has long been to close the entry to the maze at 4pm or whatever time an area closes for the day. Patrollers are the last skiers up the lifts at the end of the day in preparation for trail sweep. We all expect to board the ...

Skier's Code of Conduct (NSAA) Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. Whenever starting downhill or ...

Re: Man dies in fall from Mass Ski lift
When I'm patrolling, sometimes I'll park below the chairlift and call out, "safety bar, please". It almost always returns attitude. Hey, if they think that they are invincible, have at it, but I don't want to have to hump up the steep upper reaches of the lift line to recover the body. :bang

7, all at Sundown in CT, and zero up north. Long range forecasts may hold a whopper for Jan 12-14, so we'll follow the crowd then.

Re: NY Times Article on Vermont Storm Recovery
The "fix it fast, any way you can" approach is going to bite VT in the ass in the next mondo-flood event. Every washout deserved a site analysis by fluvial geomorphologists ... they didn't need huge engineering studies, but a site walk with a skilled stream guy could have helped a lot. I'v...

Given the lack of coverage given to WWII in contemporary high school education, the efforts of "The Greatest Generation" are becoming a distant memory. Which is upsetting for several reasons.
All honor and glory to the people who fought in WWII.

Re: The world's most powerful snow-making system...
I find Hunter to be the least aesthetic ski area of any in the East. It's just blasted out of the mountain, with seemingly no consideration toward integrating into the mountain ecology. Next time you're up there, take note of the angles of the mountain. They built the trails that way, not because t...

I find Hunter to be the least aesthetic ski area of any in the East. It's just blasted out of the mountain, with seemingly no consideration toward integrating into the mountain ecology. Of course, this probably means more to me as a forest ecologist than to most skiers, but I'm just sayin' that situ...
