Why not fix the scanners so the passes do scan?
The passes embed a few coils of wire to capture RF energy to power them and give their response. They have very short range and the field has to pass through that coil. Heavy winter clothing and/or the orientation of the pass can affect performance. Then there is the processing time to do the pass lookup. No system of that complexity is foolproof.
I've noticed the scanning distance is not consistent. It seems some scanners are turned up and can scan you from 3 feet away, whereas some scanners you practically have to put the pass within an inch. Those weak scanners just hold up the line as people fumble and get rejected.

fwiw supe had groomer stripes on it as they prep for friday's open. rumor was it "could" be earlier. saw snowmakers out on the hill. way too warm now but temps drop overnight and expect them to fire up. window into friday morning. gonna guess they'll finish up on highline, snowshed and probably highlander to connect snowshed and supe. not sure of next targets, but LEF, upper chute and great bear could be candidates.

pico opens saturday.

These last several snows were the heavy dense kind. Any chance they could just groom out header or easy street without snowmaking? Not sure what kind of depth they'd prefer to have before using the tiller on the groomer.

Upper parts of header they probably could but not enough snow towards the bottom.

Canyon Runout was groomed today on natural only. Mixed in some dirt and mud with the snow.

Awesome. We got to ski Pico on an early "nat" opening not too many years ago.

Back to K: At least they opened up most of the Canyon yesterday [Monday].

Looks like both lines on Snowshed are hitting the skier's left half, a lot going on in the Highline area (both sides running?). Gotta be something else somewhere. Look forward to first hand reports.

thought it was a pretty good effort. lots in snowshed both on the main trail and that lower carpet? highline, LEF, upper mouse (perhaps to build a new park) and the upper mixing bowl. since they closed the canyon runs around 11am and the snowmakers had wired the runout, suspect they were gonna fire that up though didn't actually see it, but there was no other reason to close those runs. didn't observe anything on bitter. maybe highlander. also had wired that learn-to-ski at the top of the road.

in any case, this all augurs for a great weekend w supe & snowshed coming on-line in addition to highline & LEF.

I talked to a crew of snow makers on Sunday. They were heading to Needles to set up guns in anticipation of cold air coming in. I believe CC.

They've really shaken up the order of things. Highline wasn't done until mid January the last 3 years. LEF wasn't until a week or two later the last two years. It seems like they were prioritized in place of Bittersweet, Upper Chute, Great Bear, and Full House, which were pushed back in the rollout. In any case, this weekend, they'll be significantly ahead of where they were the same weekend the last 3 years.
